Medications

The purpose of administering medication in school is to help each student maintain an optimal state of health to enhance his/her educational experience.

1. Medications should be given at home whenever possible.
2. Medications given during school hours should be only those necessary to provide the student access to his educational program.
3. A medication form must be signed and completed by the parent/guardian of the student who is to receive medication.
4. Medications prescribed for a student are to be in the original container with pharmacy label and student’s name affixed.
5. All permission for long-term medication shall be renewed annually.
6. Over-the-counter medications must be brought in with the manufacturer’s original label with ingredients listed and student’s name affixed to the original package.
7. Over-the-counter medications must be age appropriate and will be given in quantity suggested on the package. For instance, Tylenol or Advil comes in children’s dose and adult. If the adult package says “for children under 14 consult a physician” the medication WILL NOT be given to a student not 14 years of age. Another example, if directions say “one dose every 6 hours”, we WILL NOT give two, even if parent/guardian directs to do so. Also, OTC medications will not be kept at Taylor Primary or Taylor Intermediate without a doctor’s script specifying WHAT the medication is for and WHEN it is to be given. Students at Taylor High School and Taylor Middle School may keep OTC medications such as Tylenol and Advil in the Nurse’s Clinic with signed permission by parent/guardian.
8. Herbs and dietary supplements are not medications and will not be dispensed at school.
9. THE PARENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DELIVERING ALL MEDICATION TO SCHOOL IN A PROPERLY LABELED CONTAINER WITH WRITTEN PERMISSION. STUDENTS ARE NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TO BRING MEDICATION TO THE SCHOOL IN BOOK BAGS, ETC. LIKEWISE, MEDICATION WILL NOT BE SENT HOME WITH STUDENT.
10. Medications will NOT be given without a proper written authorization.
11. Parent/guardian is responsible at the end of the treatment regime for removing from the school any unused medication, which was prescribed for the child. If the parent does not pick up the medication by the end of the school year, it will be properly disposed of.

The school nurse has the right to withhold medication doses until consulting with parent or physician if based on her/his professional assessment taking the medication would not be in the best interest of the student.
