On September 6, 2016, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation requiring all school districts in New York State to test water systems for lead contamination and to take responsive actions. This law, and subsequent NYS Department of Health Regulations, requires samples to be drawn from elementary schools on or before September 30 and from middle and high schools on or before October 31. Here in the Saranac District, we collected samples in our elementary schools on September 17 and in the middle and high schools on October 1. Samples are required to be "first draw" samples, which requires that the water is motionless for at least eight (8) hours in the pipes and fixtures before it is collected. The level of lead concentration at a water outlet that requires us to take action is above fifteen (15) parts per billion. Test results received to-date are listed in the documents below:
