Winter Reading
Avoid Winter Break “Brain Freeze”
The anticipated winter break is upon us. I love having those two weeks to spend with family and friends. However, two weeks is a long time to go without stimulating our brain. Here are some fun activities to keep children’s skills sharp and avoid the “brain freeze”.
- Visit the Putnam County Library. They have great books! Children love to read about winter, holidays, and snowmen.
- Play board games. Many board games help practice reading and math skills: Brain Quest, Cranium, Monopoly, Clue, Scattergories, and Dominoes (just a few examples).
- Holiday Cooking- have your child help you make a holiday treat by reading a recipe in a cookbook. Measuring the ingredients will be a great way to sharpen their math skills.
- Internet Scavenger Hunt- Think of a random question you would like answered and help your child research the internet for the answer. Examples: Where was the first basketball game played? How big was the biggest snowflake? Who invented hot chocolate?
- Enjoy a family read-aloud of your favorite holiday book. Older children enjoy listening to a good story as much as the younger children.
I hope these activities will help add to your holiday fun. Have a safe and healthy winter break!
