The first day of school was an exciting one for students at Hungerford Elementary located in the town of Eatonville. Principal Letecia Harris, staff and teachers celebrated and welcomed students back as they walked the “red carpet” this morning.

Students were also greeted by some very special guests from Travel + Leisure including CEO Michael Brown and Eatonville Mayor Eddie Cole. Thanks to a special donation from this partner in education, Travel + Leisure Charitable Foundation, students received backpacks filled with their school supplies needed to start the new school year. Superintendent Barbara Jenkins joined in on the celebration and kicked off the first day of school wishing students a successful school year.

In June, the School Board approved a scholarship program agreement between Orange County Public Schools and Travel + Leisure Charitable Foundation. The program supports Edgewater, Evans and Wekiva high school graduates who are full-time residents of the Town of Eatonville and attended Hungerford Elementary. The program provides 200 scholarships annually for graduating students to attend a Florida state public college or university, a Florida community college and Florida technical school. The program is targeted to promote educational opportunities within the Eatonville community.
