Nearly 2,000 middle school students visited the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Forty students from each middle school attended the special program, “Spreading the Dream,” to educate them on the importance of the Civil Rights Era.
The African American Council of Christian Clergy, Dr. Phillips Center, Florida A&M College of Law, Orange County Public Schools, and Orlando Mayor’s MLK Commission partnership provided this unique opportunity to our students.
The combined expertise of our partners facilitated an artistic production by Miami’s Theatre South in its performance of “I have a Dream,” a multimedia presentation with singing, music, excerpts and historical images of the Civil Rights Movement.
The “Spreading the Dream” initiative is further augmented by a countywide essay contest. Every middle school in the district is invited to participate in an essay contest focused on the Civil Rights Era. Every middle school will be afforded a $100 prize to be given to the top essayist. The overall essay contest winner will receive an additional $400 award for a total of $500.
We appreciate business sponsors Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and the Orlando Utilities Commission for also helping fund this event and essay contest.
