The School Board of Orange County held its re-organization board meeting at 3 p.m. at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:
District 7 School Board member Melissa Byrd elected vice chair
Melissa Byrd was elected vice chairman of the Orange County School Board. She was elected to represent District 7 in 2018 and was re-elected in 2020 for a second four-year term. Member Byrd serves on the Community Action Board for Orange County Government, the Apopka Community Advisory Council for AdventHealth Apopka, the Wekiva Culinary Program Advisory Council, the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the iBuild Central Florida 2021 Board of Directors. In 2019, Melissa was named an Emerging Leader from the Florida School Boards Association and in 2020, she earned the distinction of Certified Board Member. Learn more about

School Board meeting dates and times established for the next year
Historically, the school board has been conducting regular board meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. This practice will continue with the following modifications:
• one meeting in December 2021 due to Winter Break
• one meeting in March 2022 due to Spring Break
• one meeting in July 2022 due to summer shut down
The tentative budget public hearing meeting on July 26, 2022 meets requirements for the Truth In Millage (TRIM).

School Board unanimously approved the renaming of the Magic Way Facility as the John Morris Facilities Complex
On Nov. 9, 2021, the recommended alternative name “John Morris Facilities Complex” was submitted through an online survey to staff and community stakeholders (Citizens’ Construction Oversight and Value Engineering Committee). The survey closed on Nov. 11, 2021. The overwhelming response to the survey supported the recommended change.
