The School Board of Orange County held a regularly scheduled board meeting at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center while also utilizing telephonic conferencing Tuesday, Aug. 11. These are the highlights of the meeting:
 
School Board approves five policy revisions for the 2020-21 school year
The purpose of these revisions is to assure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, Florida State Board of Education Rules, Board Policies, administrative rules, procedures and guidelines. The board also periodically reviews policies to promote transparency and accountability in the expenditure of public funds and the use of public resources.

Policy IHAM – Local School Wellness
Policy IA – Student Progression Plan
 
School Board approves a new face covering policy for disease prevention purposes
Pursuant to §120.54(4)(a), Fl. Stat., the School Board determines that the Covid-19 pandemic is an immediate threat to the health, safety and welfare of students.  In order to protect the welfare of students and staff, the School Board believes it is imperative to enact a policy requiring the use of face covering to assist students, staff and the community as whole in reducing the spread of Covid-19. Policy EBBA is being revised with School Board approved changes and will be posted with the approved changes.
 
OCPS schools will be hosting on-campus vaccination events during the school day
In partnership with Orange County Public Schools, MAXVAX, LLC d/b/a Health Hero Florida shall provide influenza vaccinations and vaccinations required by Florida Department of Health. These vaccinations will be conducted by licensed healthcare providers to all students who have furnished a signed parent or legal guardian consent to receive vaccinations. MAXVAX, LLC d/b/a Health Hero Florida will utilize OCPS schools during the school day to provide these services. MAXVAX, LLC d/b/a Health Hero Florida will act in accordance with CDC guidelines and accepted standards of medical practice. Students will not be refused services due to lack of insurance or inability to pay an administrative fee.
 
School Board approves a continuation of its dual enrollment agreement with Valencia
The Dual Enrollment Articulation Agreement for the 2020-21 school year includes: the standard tuition rate ($71.98) per credit hour from funds provided by the Florida Education Finance Program, Valencia instructors who teach dual enrollment courses at the high schools, up to $5,000, and the required textbook or electronic access fee for instructional materials.
 
District is approved to offer a school-work program with Randall Construction
The agreement establishes an educational program with Randall Construction Holdings, Inc., Randall Academy (RA). RA is a school-work program for at-risk youth. Up to ten males and females from sixteen to nineteen years old can be assigned to this program to attend school one half of the day and to work at Randall Construction Holdings, Inc. for the remaining half of the day. RA is located at 3307 Clarcona Road, Apopka, Florida 32703. The educational instruction is provided by teachers from Alternative Education. RA provides a strong mentorship program and employment for the students. RA will provide the classroom and office space.

Superintendent Barbara Jenkins announced the following new administrators:

Bethany Ledesma, principal, Chickasaw Elementary
