New Speaker: Welcome to Mondays with Maria, brought to you by The Foundation for Orange County Public Schools. Here's OCPS Superintendent, Dr. Maria Vazquez.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Hi everyone. I'm here today with Mary Bridges. She is the Executive Director of Student Services for Orange County Public Schools. And there's a new buzzword on school campuses this year. It's resiliency. Tell us about it.
Mary Bridges: Thank you so much for having me. Resiliency, Casey DeSantis, First Lady DeSantis and the Department of Education collaborated together and created new resiliency standards. And they are guiding districts on how to help assist students in learning new important skills that they can have that will help them be successful in school.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Well, resiliency is really going to touch a lot of areas, including curriculum and counseling. So for those that may be wondering, well, what is this going to mean for me? Tell us, how will that impact teachers and students?
Mary Bridges: Absolutely. So resiliency, some people call resiliency soft skills. So resiliency standards are things like critical thinking, problem solving, empathy, gratitude. So by teaching these to our students and even our, our staff, it will just change the culture of the schools. So by having these skills the climate and the culture of the school can improve. We found that for students to be successful in school, in colleges, and even our employers in the area are saying these are the skills they need in order to be successful.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: And we know that our students, especially in our secondary schools, are not feeling that they're connected as much as we would like them to. And I think, you know, advocacy, being able to advocate for themselves on what they need ties into that resiliency. So I, I'm excited to see how we're able to incorporate these skills into our everyday curriculum and see the impact that's going to have on our students. Thank you so much for what your team has done under your leadership to put this out to our schools.
Mary Bridges: We are so excited to see how it will improve our schools and how it will improve our student success.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Thank you so much for joining me. We will continue to update families on topics important to you right here on Mondays with Maria. Don't forget about the Thought Exchange that's open right now. You can share your ideas on topics or questions. The QR code is right there on your screen. I'll see you next Monday.
