Welcome to Mondays with Maria, brought to you by the Foundation for Orange County Public Schools. Here's OCPS Superintendent, Dr. Maria Vazquez.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Hello everyone. Dr. Tashanda Brown-Cannon is here with me. She is our Chief Academic Officer. Tashanda, Parent Academies are back this school year, and I'm so excited that our families are going to be able to participate in this upcoming school year. And I think the first one is coming up this Saturday at Colonial High School. Is that correct?
Dr. Tashanda Brown-Cannon: Absolutely. We're very excited.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Yes, it’s such a great opportunity for our families. Can you tell us a little bit for those of our parents who may not know about our parent academy?
Dr. Tashanda Brown-Cannon: So, this Saturday our families will have the opportunity to choose from 16 sessions, including how to help your child become a better reader at home, student discipline and strategies to adjust your child to kindergarten, middle school, or even high school.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Yeah, it’s the start of the school year, so there's lots of adjustments that we are all making. So, if our families, and I want to make sure it's not just for parents. So, if you have grandparents, any type of guardians, you are more than welcome to attend one of our parent academies. Where can they find more information about our parent academies?
Dr. Tashanda Brown-Cannon: So, more information can be found relating to our parent academies on our OCPS Parent Academy page, as well as our OCPS families YouTube channel.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Great. Well, so Parent Academy is an incredible resource for all of our parent and guardians, but what are some other ways, if they want to be engaged in their child's education or in their school, what is available for them?
Dr. Tashanda Brown-Cannon: So we encourage our families that are unable to attend the Parent Academy to view our recorded sessions. We also have weekly virtual mini academies, and we have 10 offerings of lunch and learn throughout the year. We'd love for each of our parents and community members to participate.
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Mm. Lunch and learn. That sounds like a lot of fun.
Dr. Tashanda Brown-Cannon: Absolutely
Dr. Maria Vazquez: Well, thank you. That's great information for our families. Don't forget about the Thought Exchange that's open right now. You can share your ideas on topics or questions. The QR code is right there on your screen. Thank you so much for joining me and Dr. Brown-Cannon, and for all of you watching, we will continue to update families on topics important to you right here on Mondays with Maria. I'll see you next Monday.
