Esports championship reaches next level

Students play a video game
Lake Nona High School won the district's inaugural High School Smash Bros District Championship at Full Sail University. Eighty-eight students competed at The Fortress, the largest collegiate esports arena in the nation.
 
For the past month, each participating school held qualifying competitions for up to 32 students with the top eight students from each school earning an invitation to the district championship.
 
They competed for the title of being the 2022 OCPS High School Super Smash Bros. District Champion, a championship trophy and scholarship. Full Sail awarded 1st place = $15,000; 2nd place = $10,000; 3rd place = $5,000.
 
The winners are:
1st place – Jon Gabriel Salguero – Lake Nona
2nd place – Connor Vuong – Olympia
3rd place – Franklin Hidalgo – Cypress Creek
 
Eleven of the 22 high schools competed: Apopka, Boone, Cypress Creek, Dr. Phillips, Evans, Lake Nona, Ocoee, Olympia, West Orange, Windermere and Winter Park.
