The
Florida Arts Education Association recognizes two outstanding educators for their dedication to their craft and service to others: Abigail Callaway, Dr. Phillips High School; and Kris Finn, Howard Middle School.
Callaway received the Local Art Education Association Leader Award for her advocacy for Arts Education. She has written curriculum at the district level, been actively involved with the Orange County Art Education Association facilitating and conducting professional development workshops for OCPS art teachers and organized the annual OCPS Art Educator Faculty Exhibition.
“I feel honored to be recognized for such a wonderful state award in art education. The nomination came from my colleagues which makes it more meaningful and special to me,” Callaway said. “I wouldn't be where I am today without their support and encouragement.”
In the nomination packet Kris Finn submitted about Callaway, she wrote, “Abbey Callaway constantly supports, promotes and cheerleads art events and art educators in our community. She helps set standards for others to follow and participates in creating opportunities for other art educators to grow. Abbey is a wonderful example of how to lead by example.”
Finn received the June Hinckley Art Educator Award of Excellence - for the second time in her career. Finn submitted 120 entries to the juried
FAEA 2020 Student Exhibition to provide students a growth opportunity and a chance to be part of a larger community.
“It is always a joy to be recognized,” Finn said. “The success of my students is the best measure of how my program is doing and how well my students are absorbing the goals we set together.”
FAEA’s Fresh Paint magazine, featured one of Finn’s students’ artwork, "Joy," on the cover of the summer issue.
Callaway and Finn will receive public recognition at FAEA’s annual convention, Nov. 8.
