Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination based upon disability. Section 504 is an
anti-discrimination, civil rights statute that requires the needs of
students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the
non-disabled are met. The law protects individuals whose physical or
mental disabilities substantially limit one or more "major" life
activities, such as caring for themselves, breathing, walking, or
learning. This statute protects children with physical and mental
disabilities who are not, and should not be, receiving special education
services, as well as those receiving special education services.
A parent can request a 504 plan for their child by contacting the school
administrator or school psychologist in their child's building.
