Community group Milpitas Cares along with members from the Parent Teacher Student Association came to Thomas Russell Middle School on March 10 to assist with general campus clean-up, painting, and work in the site's Parklet. Of about 30+ people who showed up to work around the campus that day, 10 dedicated adults and students came to help rebuild the paths in the Parklet, and to do extensive weeding around the native plants.
Begun in 2013, Russell Parklet has been an ongoing 8th grade project for Mrs. Flagg’s classes. The science quad previously was overgrown with various weedy types of plants. Mrs. Flagg’s classes decided to construct a Parklet for students to hang out in and enjoy at lunch and break. Over the last five years, students have dug the dry creek bed (wadi), and lined it with rocks, set out the paths, and planted a variety of California native plants. Additionally, the student body purchased the walking bridge and the sign. A pictorial history of the Parklet is on the following page. Along with the Russell Parklet, science teachers at Russell decided to paint doors with images of wildlife from California and paint walls with plants native to the surrounding hills and area. Students and science teachers have undertaken the painting of the quad walls and classroom doors. --Submitted by Myra Flagg by Amanda Montoro Twenty-five fourth grade students braved the elements to go fishing at Ed Levin Park on March 3. Volunteers from the Milpitas Rotary Club and Milpitas High School ROTC classes were organized by local Police Officer Eric Emanuelle to teach children how to fish and become stewards of the environment. The rain stopped just in time and a rainbow led the way up the hill, past the fields of mustard flowers, to the lake, where they caught eight fish (a new record) and observed the competition: herons, egrets, coots, hawks. Rotary Club members cleaned the fish for children to take home and many Rose Elementary families had memorable meals. Special thanks to Brian Shreve, Director of Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation; Wendy Zhang, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services; and Cheryl Jordan for their organizational help and special support. by Laurie Fiatal
More than 100 students attended Marshall Pomeroy Elementary School's Family Science Night on March 8. The theme was Secret Agent Science, and was organized by the school's Parent Teacher Association and the Children's Discovery Museum. Milpitas High School students volunteered torun each activity. by Tricia Brownstein, Academy of Travel and Tourism Coordinator
The Academy of Travel and Tourism sophomores at Milpitas High School participated in a work site visit March 13 at the Residence Inn in Milpitas, a longtime business partner. Students toured the facilities, learned about careers in hospitality, and were treated to a waffle breakfast. Afterward, they headed over to San Jose State University where they were invited to visit Dr. Tsu Yen's Intro to Hospitality class and viewed a presentation about "Soft Skills." Lastly, the group took a walking field trip of the campus. Dear Parents and Guardians: Empowering students to be the future leaders of our democracy is one of the reasons I was drawn to education, and I never foresaw a day when that would include helping them to grapple with the horrific violence that we have seen on school campuses such as that at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Across the nation students, educators, and parents have been in dialogue about a call to action, and while there is debate about what exactly will bring a halt to the cause of school shootings, all can agree that they must stop. We want to support our students in giving voice to their concerns, feelings, and desires to stand with their peers across the nation in support of those who died in the Douglas High School tragedy and the others before it; however, we have to consider their safety first. We cannot condone student walkouts such as those that are being advocated in social media for March 14th and April 20th. Students do have a free speech right and may express their political views if it does not present a disruption to the learning environment. Leaving campus during school hours to participate in political activity is not a safe and responsible way to work for change. We encourage you to talk to your children about how they may be feeling about this topic, and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. Student leaders at our middle and high schools have shared with administration that there may be students walking out to protest gun violence on Wednesday, March 14th. Principals have talked with the students and suggested alternatives to leaving campus, and have told students that if they choose to leave campus, it will be an unexcused absence and consequences will be administered per their student handbook. For many of our students the desire to stand in solidarity for the deaths of those in Florida is not about staging protests for or against gun control, it is about taking a moment of silence for 17 minutes. This we can support, and around 10:00am on March 14th MUSD will be taking a moment of silence to honor those students and staff members who have died in these horrible events. The length of time will depend upon what each principal and his/her staff feels is appropriate. Together we will guide our students in learning how to express themselves with civility as they become active members of our democracy, and always, we strive together for a thriving school and community culture. Dear Parents and Guardians: Today’s media post that was forwarded to MPD by a parent this morning contained statements about a sophomore possibly having a gun at an unnamed school. Chief Corpuz phoned me this morning at 7:35 and let me know he had all available officers at both high schools and was in the process of investigating it. We spoke again around 10:15am when he informed me that they did not find a credible threat, but would continue investigating and maintaining a police presence. I spoke with Chief Corpuz again at 12:05, and he let me know that the investigation revealed several layers of “hearsay” and found no evidence to validate the social media post. With all that we went through in November at MHS and what has happened in other schools across the nation, and most recently in Florida, these rumors are disconcerting. We will always take them as real threats until proven otherwise, and I am so glad we have the partnership with Milpitas police that we do as they too make the safety of our students and staff their highest priority. Our school principal teams, counselors, teachers and staff care deeply about each of our students and we all want a nurturing learning environment for them. To that end we continually strive for ways that we can ensure we are in tune with each child’s social emotional needs. It is essential that we keep lines of communication open so that we foster a school community that will continue to speak up if there is something that does not seem right or poses a threat to others. I thank the concerned parent who called MPD to let them know about the suspicious post, and her child for showing it to her. Together we provide our kids with a school community in which they can be themselves and thrive.
