Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day – Tuesday November 14th
Dear Parents and Students,
On Tuesday November 14th those students who wish to participate in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day will be dropped off at the Mapleton Food Share located at 10718 OR-126, Mapleton, OR 97453. There will be a shorter on campus walk for our PreK-2nd grade students, which will start at the Middle School building. Schools across Lane County are participating in this event as a follow up to Ruby Bridges visit with students last school year (hosted by Lane County United Way). Our Ruby Bridges Walk to School event is supported by Oregon Safe Routes to School, Lane African American/Black Student Success program, and Mapleton Community Partners.
All bus riders have the opportunity to participate, they will be picked up from their bus at their regularly scheduled routes/times. Students, escorted in groups by Mapleton Staff, will walk, ride, skate or roll from the Mapleton Food Share to school. Family members are welcome to join and walk together with their students. Students are welcome to bike, rollerblade or skateboard to school from the food share as long as they have a helmet. Loaner bikes and helmets to take home are available. Please mark need/interest on the permission slip so we can prepare for all students.
Students who do not wish to participate will be dropped off at the school as normal. Staff will be available for students that do not wish to participate. The Mapleton School District is participating in the Ruby Bridges walk to school day because we feel that it’s important to acknowledge Ruby Bridges as a significant civil rights activist and bring awareness to unifying our school district regardless of our differences.
