Explanation of House System
WHAT IS A HOUSE SYSTEM?
Houses are a way to build a family within a family. The concept of course originated from Harry Potter, and includes students/staff members in different Houses. We will incorporate a number of activities in the beginning to help build relationships with our House Families (all grade levels will be represented in each House (big group around 100 total) and House Family (divided into smaller community groups your child will go to monthly consisting of K-5 students). We will have healthy competitions with Houses, and will do a number of community service projects in the future while building and developing soft skills (acronym S.P.E.C.I.A.L.).
WHEN WILL MY CHILD MEET WITH HIS OR HER HOUSE?
Our House System kicked off on August 24th of the 2018-19 school year with students spinning a wheel to determine House selection. We have SIX total Houses at RES that your child could randomly be in based on his or her spin that have been mentioned in this newsletter.
The House names are space mission based, and created by committees of teachers that will allow for pride in whatever House your child is in! We will have House Meetings once a quarter on the Friday half days. Dates for these will be given soon.
WHERE WILL THEY MEET?
Locations will be determined at a later date, but teachers who are members of Houses that will host families will remain in their normal classroom locations. For example, if your child has Mrs. Brandon for K their House meeting location may be in the second grade hallway where Mrs. Ratliff is located. We will have plenty of staff that does not have a classroom in the halls along with PTA to help navigate students on House Meeting dates. We will also empower our 5th grade students in a leadership position to help go to the K classes and help walk them to THEIR House they have together if they are in the same House family.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOUSE AND HOUSE FAMILY?
Houses are made up of roughly 100 students and House families are the smaller communities where your child will get to know the teacher in the room along with his or her House Family Members. Each of them will have every grade level represented and will build relationships for years to come.
