    School Community Council Minutes

    Wednesday, September 27, 2023 

    Media Center

    4:00 p.m.

    Attendance: Alex Fife, Sasha Beorchia, Kirk Farmer, Alison Sorensen, Jullie Payne

    Absent: Chantel Labrum

    Alex Fife called the meeting to order. Alison Sorensen seconded the motion. 

    1. Welcome

      1. Notification of SCC Election Results to School Community

        1. Size of our council

    • The council is made up of 4 parents and 2 staff members of the school staff. No other community members volunteered to join the council in the parent role. 

    • Alex Fife motioned to have our council be made up of 4 parents and 2 staff members. Alison Sorensen seconded the vote. The vote was unanimous. Every member voted for the motion. 

    • Elections are held in the fall for the council. There will be no vote of new council members if there are not enough volunteers to fill positions.  

    1. School Council Members 2023-24

    • Sasha Beorchia motioned to have Alex Fife be the Community Council Chair. Alison seconded the nomination. The vote was unanimous. 

    1. Nomination and selection of a vice-chair

    • Alison Sorensen motioned to have Kirk Farmer be the Community Council Chair. Alex seconded the nomination. The vote was unanimous.

    -  All members agreed to have their phone numbers posted on the website. 

    1. Review Meeting Schedule

    School Community Council meetings are typically held on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 4:00 pm.  There is a date adjustment to two of the meetings below.

    • A school district member will be attending the meeting on November 1, 2023 to discuss the bond. 

     

     

    1. New Business

    • Council members viewed an 8 minute video explaining the purpose of the School Community Council. 

    1. SCC Handbook- Hard Copy 

    • Each council member has a hard copy of the handbook.  

    1. Order of Business Procedures

    • Members were given time to review Order of Business Procedures. Kirk Farmer asked Jullie Payne to define what a conflict of interest is (see Order of Business Procedures). Jullie gave an example.  A conflict of interest could be if a member was voting on an issue where they would benefit financially from the outcome of the vote. 

    • Alex motioned to vote on accepting the rules of order and procedures. Alison seconded it. The vote was unanimous. 

    1. School LAND Trust Spending 

    Some current purchases and upcoming funding expenditures:

    • Two TVs were purchased to replace old short throw projectors. 

    • Conference tickets were purchased for 5 staff members to attend a conference in Salt Lake City about Professional Learning Communities. $6,000 will be spent for this conference. The conference is a two day conference. The cost covers substitutes, housing, and conference fees. 

    • Funding will be spent paying for substitutes to cover for teachers that will attend an IEP meeting. 

    • Funding will pay for one hour of aide time to assist EL students in addition to the instruction provided by the full-time ESL teacher. The school has 25 ELs students. 

    • Goal #3 funds a full time counselor.

    2. Safe Routes

      1. Discuss area of 800 E without sidewalk

    • Jullie Payne will be meeting with Alan Luce, the North Logan City manager, in the upcoming weeks concerning this sidewalk. This is an informational meeting. Alex Fife asked to attend this meeting. 

    1. Annual District Land Trust Training

      1. October 3, 2023 at 6:00 pm via Zoom 

    2. Other

    • Jullie Payne mentioned a parent asked if it would be possible to pass out bond flyers at school pickup. Jullie told the parent that she did not feel like that would be appropriate because that was not respecting the parent’s personal space. 

    III. Adjournment

    • Alex Fife motioned to adjourn the meeting. Sasha Beorchia seconded the motion.
