Early Literacy Skills

  • What Can You Do to Help?

One way to help your child learn to read is to help them master reading skills as they are introduced in Kindergarten.  Review worksheets and books your student brings home from Saxon Phonics, My Sidewalks (ERI) and Reading Mastery.  Check with your child's teacher if you have questions on your child's progress in reading.

Just as importantly, please make sure you read to your child 15-20 minutes daily.  There is a significant amount of research showing that this one act of reading to your child has a significant impact on student achievement.  Reading to your children will give them a good model of fluent reading, will increase their language and vocabulary skills, and will motivate them to want to become a reader, too.
