What is Section 504?

    Section 504 is the part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
    that applies to individuals with disabilities. It helps protect
    the civil rights of persons with disabilities. Section 504 is a
    nondiscrimination statute, prohibiting discrimination based on
    disability.
     
    Section 504 requires that no person with a disability
    be excluded from or denied benefits of any program
    receiving federal financial assistance; this includes
    education.
     
    Federal Requirement
     
    Section 504 and special education (IDEA) are two possible
    service options for children with disabilities. All school districts
    should have a Section 504 Coordinator to answer questions
    regarding Section 504 procedures.
