Healthy Changes in Our School Cafeterias
-
Cache County School District school cafeterias have met tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students with all the nutrition they need to succeed in school. Now is a great time to encourage your children to choose school lunch!
School meals offer students milk, fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. For the School Year 2023-2024, school lunches and breakfasts will meet these standards:
- Age-appropriate calorie limits
- Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of fruit or vegetable)
- A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
- More whole grains
- Less sodium
This fall, as students go through the lunch lines, they can take all the fruits and vegetables they want but are required to have at least 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable with their meal. Our wonderful staff will serve the grain and the meat portion. They do not have to have milk with their meal.
New regulations called Smart Snacks in Schools (ala carte in 7-12 grades) apply to all foods and beverages sold to students on campus during the school day. Products must first meet at least 1 of the 4 general nutrition standards.
- Whole grain-rich
- Fruit/Vegetable
- Dairy
- Protein
Products must also meet calorie, sugar, and sodium restrictions.
School meals are a great value and a big convenience for busy families too! We look forward to welcoming your children to the cafeteria this fall.
