Welcome Back Letter
-
Hello White Pine Families,
Welcome to another school year at White Pine Elementary. We look forward to starting the 2024-2025 year. For those of you that are new to our school, we are excited to have you join such an amazing group of students and school community. Our teachers and staff always have the students' best interest in mind. Their hard work and caring approach to education make White Pine Elementary stand out. We work collaboratively to maintain and strengthen a strong learning community while keeping the students at the center of our focus. I can’t express enough how amazing our teachers and support staff are at White Pine.
This is my third year as the principal of White Pine Elementary and my 21st year in education. I taught 6th grade for seven years and have been in administration since then. My main responsibility is to ensure every student has access to the best education possible. I love working with the students in classes, playing games with them at recess, and building positive relationships. It is important for me to have every interaction with the students be a positive one. I have the best job in the world because of them.
I am excited to get to know all of you a little more this year. It is truly rewarding to be involved in and work side by side with volunteers in important organizations and committees like PTA and School Community Council. I also know that many of you cannot volunteer your time at school, but you provide support in many other ways. I know we all want what is best for our students. I am always open to suggestions and input on how we can improve. Please feel free to contact me at any time.
Each new school year brings change, we would like to welcome the following teachers to White Pine:
Heidi Nielson, RTI Facilitator
Hi! My name is Heidi Nielson and I am so excited and also a little nervous to leave teaching and be the RtI facilitator at White Pine. I was a para while going to college, then I taught 4th grade for 4 years, and have spent the last 8 years teaching 1st-all at Sunrise. Teaching first grade and getting my masters in literacy have made helping kids learn to read a passion of mine and leaving the classroom is going to be incredibly difficult, but I look forward to being able to collaborate with and learn from all of you. I’ve heard nothing but great things about White Pine and am excited to be part of such a great community. When I'm not with first graders, you can find me in the mountains hiking, paddle boarding, or passing out on the couch watching Netflix because of the aforementioned first graders. ;) I hope to be someone you all feel comfortable coming to for help, brainstorming, and to support what you are already doing. See you all soon!
Erica Rood, Preschool Teacher
Hello!
I am Erica Rood. This is my first year as a teacher and I am beyond excited to start at White Pine Elementary. I recently graduated from USU majoring in Special Education. I grew up in Cache Valley and I love it here! In my free time I love to be outdoors, read books, play games, and spend time with loved ones. I am looking forward to a great school year!Amanda Port, Computer Teacher
Hey White Pine Family! My name is Amanda Port and I am so excited that I get to be your new Computer Specialist this year! Most of you know me through one of my four kids: Shaylie, Kade, Jace, and McKenzie. We've lived in Richmond for 7 years and have absolutely loved it here! I grew up in Athens, Georgia and my husband, Zack, grew up in Wales, Utah. We love the small town feel and community that has helped us in raising our children so far. When our youngest started kindergarten last year, I took a leap and became a Reading Aide at White Pine. Best. Decision. Ever. I had so much fun getting to know all the kids and be graced with all their unique personalities! Before I came to White Pine, I was a tumbling coach, a sign language interpreter, and a family-emotional maintenance instructor. When I'm not at school, I spend most of my time being a sports mom and driving all over the valley. We have 3 dogs and way too many chickens. I absolutely love reading, eating and sleeping. I live on humor, movie quotes, chocolate and caffeine. All the good things! This will be a fun learning curve for me this year, but your kids are awesome and will make sure I stay on track! Can't wait to get started! Go be great, and I'll see you soon!We would also like to let you know about some other staffing changes:
- Lindsey Johnson, former 3rd grade teacher is moving to 2nd grade
- Devanie Jensen, former 1st grade teacher is moving to 3rd grade
School Hours: Monday-Thursday 9:05-3:35, Friday 9:05-2:20
In the interest of safety, please do not drop off your children before 8:35 AM, as there is no supervision before that time. Students should be picked up from school by 3:45 PM on Monday-Thursday and by 2:35 PM on Friday. Preschool is Monday-Thursday 9:05-11:35 AM or 1:05-3:35 PM.
Arrival Times and Attendance:
Our school day begins at 9:05 AM every day. Please be sure to have your child/children here on time. Each teacher starts the day with important curriculum based practices. Consistently tardy students miss essential building block skills throughout the year. Students who have excessive absences also miss critical instruction. Please help them be as successful as possible by having them in attendance as much as possible. All students who arrive after 9:05 AM must sign in at the office. If your child will not be present, please call and inform our school office at (435) 258-2344.
Meal Prices and Menus:
This year, school lunch will cost $2.05 daily, $10.25 weekly. Breakfast will be served from 8:35-9:00 AM and will cost $1.40 daily, $7.00 weekly. Lunch menus will be available on our school website by clicking on the fork and knife icon on White Pine’s webpage.
Free and reduced lunch information and applications are available at https://www.ccsdut.org/Page/160. Please apply even if you don’t think you will qualify. It will help bring in funds for our school.
We look forward to another great year at White Pine Elementary.
Sincerely,
Derek Beer

Top Priorities:
These are the necessities that every student will need and use individually:
-
2 notebooks (single-subject, spiral bound, different colors/designs)
-
3 folders (different colors or designs, with pockets)
-
Pencils (mechanical pencils are preferred, along with replacement lead. At least two dozen #2 wooden pencils are the other option.)
-
Erasers (several pencil top erasers or one big “pink pearl” type . . . whatever works)
-
Dry erase markers (2 or 3 to use on small whiteboards; Expo brand seems to work best.)
-
Pencil box or Pouch (not too large . . . please label it with your child’s name. Please also make sure the pencil box is one that will fit inside a desk.
These are the necessities that can be donated for whole-class use (not kept in individual desks):
-
Tissues (at least 2 or 3 boxes for all to share)
-
Hand Sanitizer (unscented; with a pump lid)
-
Normally we would ask for markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, and scissors, but we have a good supply of these that are still usable, so please focus on other items instead.
*We will label the notebooks and folders during the first week of class.
*Water bottles are welcome as long as they do not tip over easily and do not leak when knocked
over. Please test this at home first. :) Water bottles may only contain plain water (no juice, soft drinks, etc.).
Please DO NOT bring:
Experience has taught us that these items cause more trouble than they’re worth:
-
Multiple-subject notebooks
-
Sticky notes
-
Pens of any kind or color (not even erasable)
-
Bulky binders/organizers (I know they are fun, but there just isn’t room for them.)
-
On-desk organizers (e.g., plastic cups and trays to hold sticky notes, pencils, etc.)
-
White-out (Erasers work fine; I’ll provide white-out if needed.)
-
Miscellaneous office supplies (e.g., hole punches, paper clips, rubber bands, tape, magnets, stickers)
-
Pencils, erasers, etc. that are more like toys than tools.
