Opportunities in Journalism at The Ranch!

Howdy Longhorns, it’s Mr. T. in the Journalism and Broadcast Journalism Department at GRHS.

We have a myriad of courses and opportunities for you in the Journalism Department; here’s a sample of some of them below.  It’s always my pleasure to speak to students and parents about how students may excel in these programs.

Stop by Room 1419 anytime or call me at 832.223.4236 or email me at [email protected].  I’m happy to speak with you anytime!

GRHS Legacy Yearbook

The Journalism Department students create, produce and deliver our annual Legacy Yearbook through our Advanced Journalism—Yearbook classes. You’ll learn photography, layout, headline and caption writing, and more in the Yearbook classes. More importantly, you’ll be able to use every ounce of your natural creativity to produce our book!

The Wrangler

The Wrangler is our campus online newspaper.  As a member of one of our journalism classes, you’ll use your training in writing for different publications by posting your work online in our newspaper.  Student reporters, photographers, feature writers, opinion writers, sports writers, etc. may publish their work online during your tenure in the program.  You’ll also learn proper newspaper style, layout, headline writing, photography and more, and how to apply those tools to your projects.

GRHS News

Our students produce a weekly TV news program, featuring interviews, features, sports and other happenings at The Ranch!  As part of the broadcast team, you’ll learn how to read from a teleprompter, how to conduct an on-air interview, how to produce a TV news or feature segment, and how to use Adobe Premiere Pro to produce a compelling TV news program.  Don’t want to be on camera?  No problem: we have many “behind the scenes” positions that are essential to the production of our weekly show! All our news programs and features are posted on our YouTube channel.

GRHS IRadio

Are you interested in live radio?  Would you like to broadcast live Longhorn sports events?  We’re entering our 11th year broadcasting GRHS events on GRHS IRADIO, our campus radio station.  Who listens to our broadcasts? Anywhere there’s an internet connection and an internet device, we have listeners; our fans, parents, relatives, and alumni listen on their laptops, desktops, phones and tablets from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, Africa, and even from oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico!

We need student broadcasters as on-field sideline reporters, play-by-play announcers, analysts, reporters and more.  Not interested in being on the air?  We have many “behind the scenes” positions that are essential to getting on the air, staying on the air and producing a live radio broadcast.
