Poetry Out Loud Contest

Event: January 31, 2023 @ 4:00pm

The Los Angeles County of Education and the California Arts Council sponsors the "Poetry Out Loud" program which encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance, helping students master public speaking skills, build self-confirdence, and appreciate the art of poetry.  High school students are invited to participate in the site competition. The top two finalists from each site will compete at the District competition. A winner and runner-up from the District competition move on to compete at the County Poetry Out Loud Content.

Math Field Day

Event: March 25, 2023

Every fall, each elementary and middle school in GUSD identifies high-achieving math students to participate in math enrichment activities in order to prepare for the District-wide Math Field Day competition. Identified students in fourth through sixth grade practice math skills including computation and problem-solving. The District-wide Math Field Day competition is held each spring. The winners of the District-wide competition are invited to represent GUSD at the Los Angeles County Math Field Day competition, which is also held each spring.

Los Angeles County Math Field Day

Event: April 2023

The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) hosts a county-wide Math Field Day competition each spring. County Math Field Day is designed as an enrichment activity to promote mathematical reasoning, teamwork and a balanced mathematics curriculum for students in upper elementary and middle school. Participation allows students to demonstrate their math knowledge through competition. The competition covers computational and procedural skills, conceptual understanding and problem-solving.

Scholastic Bowl

Event: March 6, 2023 - 6:00pm 

Scholastic Bowl offers high-achieving high school students in GUSD an opportunity to represent their school and participate in an academic competition in the areas of Fine Arts, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Science and Science. Scholastic Bowl competitions are held each spring. Each of the four high schools in GUSD sends a team of five students to the competition. The first phase of the competition is an essay contest. Team members are given 60 minutes to write an essay addressing an assigned prompt on a controversial issue. The second phase of the competition (typically held one week after the essay competition) is held in a quiz format. During the first part of the quiz section, team members collaborate to come up with the answers; during the second part of the quiz section, individual students respond to questions.

Hollywood-Burbank Airport Student Art Tower Banner Contest- This contest has been cancelled by the Hollywood-Burbank Airport for the 2022-2023 school year. 

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority annually seeks student artwork to be made into banners for display on the building facade to offer airport visitors an added dimension to their experience of the airport and of aviation. Student artists from Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena School District high school grades 9-12 are encouraged to create art that will take best advantage of a large-scale, outdoor display venue and effectively target viewers who are on the move with decorative, creative illustration that is bold, colorful, and at the same time instantly viewable, understandable, and stimulating.
