Providing a Safe Learning Environment for All Students

Dear Glendale Unified Students, Staff, Families, and Community:

I hope you are taking the opportunity to relax and recharge this summer with family, friends, and loved ones. We just concluded our summer school session where nearly 4,900 students had the opportunity to accelerate their learning, recover credits when needed, and participate in summer enrichment activities. It has been a pleasure visiting our campuses and observing summer learning in action over the past few weeks. I look forward to getting to know each of our communities when school resumes on August 21.

As we look forward to the upcoming school year, I want to reaffirm Glendale Unified School District’s commitment to providing a safe learning environment for all students. Regardless of immigration status, all students have a right to attend school in a learning environment free from discrimination, harassment, bullying, violence, and intimidation.

The Glendale Unified Board of Education has adopted policies and supported Administrative Regulations declaring that we will never ask for a students’ or parents’ immigration status. For further assurances, GUSD site administrators and support staff will not volunteer student records to any law enforcement that does not first present the appropriate court authorization(s) to obtain the records. Our schools will continue to be places where students can learn and thrive without fear of being asked about their immigrant status and without fear that they will be reported if their immigrant status is known.

In Glendale Unified schools, we embrace diversity, focus on equity, and guarantee safety to accelerate learning and increase pathways for every student. We are resolute in our commitment to provide all of our students an education that prepares them for success in college, career, and life.

This is a frightening time for many students and their families. Working in partnership with the community, we are providing schools with resources and materials to support and guide our undocumented students and families. Information and resources are available at www.gusd.net/knowyourrights.

    Sincerely,
