On April 15, 2024 (V-Healthy® Day), 14 different schools, and nearly 4,000 students participated in a vascular health education program that focuses on empowering high school students to better understand the impact of vascular risk factors on their vascular health decades later.
Thanks to Mrs. Wyckoff, and the program educators, all Gilboa-Conesville Central School students in grades 7 through 12, who are taking science classes, were able to benefit from the program.
Through the donated time of professional nurses, students learned about the effects of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, genetics, and nutrition on their vascular health.
The program began with a short PowerPoint presentation introducing vascular health, the students then broke into smaller learning stations where they all were able to take their own blood pressure, experience scientific innovations that are used during surgeries to correct vascular issues, and a nutrition station where they learned how to determine percentages of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats from food choices they made.
Additionally, through this amazing non-profit organization, students are given the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in scholarship money towards furthering their education. Scholarship applications, and the take-home assignment, for the scholarship opportunity can be acquired from Mrs. Wyckoff by interested students.
It was a fun-filled day of learning! GCCS students send a huge thank you to the medical professionals who donated their time to this worthy cause: Geraldine Barry, Alissa Cox, Deborah Hill, and Anita Suchdeve.
