Art Students Visit Historic Olana

Art Students Visit Historic Olana

Students in Mrs. Mierzwa-Latza’s Adobe Photoshop and Drawing and Painting courses spent an afternoon at historic Olana.

Olana was the home of Frederick Church, one of the members of the Hudson River School painters. The Hudson River School painters focused on the beauty of the scenic Hudson River area and painted the landscapes in their Romantic Style.

The Adobe Photoshop class toured the grounds with their guide, Jon, absorbing the same view as the River painters did. These images will be now digitally transformed into computerized oil paintings.

The Drawing and Painting class toured the home of Frederick Church, stepping into his life of worldly treasures, amazing architecture, and personal heartbreak. Later they viewed copies of Church’s sketchbooks as they worked in a guided drawing activity by their docent, Christy.

Both groups had a bonus activity as they became fully interactive with the temporary kinetic sculpture on the grounds. The installation is by Sculptor Jesús Rafael Sotos. It’s an iconic outdoor sculpture, named Penetrable, which is only on display for a few more weeks.

The high school art classes would like to thank the staff at Olana and April, our bus driver, for a wonderful trip.
