Dear Florence Unified School District Families,
The Arizona Education Department released the 2021-22 A-F School Letter Grades for all public schools statewide. These reports provide information about student achievement, college and career readiness, student growth, and other key areas of interest to families and the general public.
We are pleased to share our letter grades with the FUSD community as we work to recover from the impacts of the pandemic and ensure our students have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
While we are seeing many positive trends in the data, it is clear that we have much work to do to ensure our students achieve their full potential. At the same time, there are also a number of areas where we can improve which is why our focus this year is student achievement.
We are incredibly proud of our hard-working students and educators, who have put forth their best efforts under extremely difficult conditions. As a district, our focus is on continuous improvement and ensuring our students recover from any learning loss experienced during the pandemic.
Together, with the combined efforts of our teachers, students, staff and parents, we will move forward focused on accelerated learning across all our schools. FUSD teachers and staff are up for the challenge and are driven to ensure our students have the resources and support they need to truly thrive. Thank you for your continued support as we meet the needs of our students during this critical time.

Estimadas Familias FUSD,
Superintendente, Chris Knutsen

Dear FUSD families,
Today is a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements of our graduating seniors. This evening our graduates will be walking across the stage to receive their diplomas at each of our three high schools, Florence, Poston Butte, and San Tan Foothills. I personally congratulate each of them and I acknowledge that their accomplishments are indicative of the resiliency they have shown throughout their academic journey, especially during the past few years.
Despite this auspicious occasion, we must hold close in our hearts the innocent children and staff of Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. As a school community, we are heartbroken by such a horrific act of violence. The entire FUSD family extends their heartfelt sympathies to the Uvalde community.
As we begin our summer break, I want to reassure our families and community that Florence Unified is committed to the safety of our students, staff, and families. We are grateful for our partnership and strong relationship with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, who always responds expeditiously when we need them. Our commitment to safety will continue throughout the summer as we work to strengthen our emergency response plans while providing the necessary resources and tools to support social and emotional health.
Even though the students will not be on campus, our work continues, as FUSD will host the 1st SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Academy next week. Members of our administrative team will be engaging in meaningful work to provide the support our students and staff need during these emotionally challenging times in our lives. I recommend that families visit www.nasponline.org for additional support and information.
My hope is that we will all work together in peace, compassion, and kindness as we celebrate the milestones of our seniors and prepare to welcome our students back to school in July.
With an optimistic heart, I congratulate all our graduating seniors tonight and wish you all a safe, restful, and relaxing summer break.

FUSD families and community,
As Superintendent, my commitment has always been to the students of my district, to adhere to our Mission and Vision and to always put Kids First. I strongly believe in the need for our students to have access to an education that enables them to become responsible and autonomous learners in developmentally appropriate ways so they are able to establish positive relationships, in school and in life. These essential skills will also help our students cope with negative peer pressure, bullying and other social challenges as they navigate and make sense of the world today.Since my initial communication to families regarding the possible curriculum adoption of “Making Proud Choices!” I have welcomed input and stated that parent feedback is an integral part of the curriculum review and adoption process. I am grateful to the Pinal County Health Department, and FUSD administration who were willing to meet with families to clarify any concerns and confusion. I have personally reached out to individuals who voiced concerns and offered to engage in an open dialogue; only to have my invitation declined.
Additionally, across the state, we are seeing elevated positive cases of COVID-19. With staffing shortages and increased spread of the virus, it would not be advantageous to conduct a meeting without causing further spread within the community. With consideration to all I have mentioned above:
- All meetings regarding “Making Proud Choices!” have been canceled. This includes the in-person meeting scheduled for Monday, January 24th as well as the virtual meeting scheduled for Monday, January 31st.
- Postpone presenting the “Making Proud Choices!” curriculum to the Governing Board for approval and adoption at this time.
- Establish an advisory committee in the future, so that there is fair representation from our district stakeholders for the purposes of reviewing the curriculum and making recommendations to the Governing Board.
In closing, I would like to reiterate that high-quality education can equip our students with a sense of purpose, and the competencies they need, to shape their own lives and contribute to the lives of others. Let us continue to work together to ensure their success but with mutual respect and kindness.Your partner in education,
Superintendent, Chris Knutsen

RE: Board Approval of Boundary Realignment for the 2022-2023 School Year
Dear FUSD families,
On November 18, 2021 FUSD communicated the need to revise district boundaries as our district is experiencing hyper-growth. As I had stated in that letter, the main goal is to ensure that all students throughout the district receive high quality instruction in a safe learning environment.
Committed to this goal, the Boundary Realignment Committee provided two proposals to present to the public at three public forums, held in November and December, 2021. The proposals were also presented to the Florence Unified School District Governing School Board members to review. Parent feedback was welcomed and the submissions were considered in making the final recommendation to the Governing School Board at the meeting held on January 11, 2022 in which the Board voted and approved Option #1. Details about the boundary realignment including maps and FAQ’s can be found on our website.
Parents who are interested in requesting a boundary variance for their children can do so by submitting a boundary variance request form that is found on the district website. If approved, parents will be notified by Friday, March 11, 2022.
The K-8 schools included in this boundary realignment will be hosting Open House nights to welcome families and to take a tour of the school campuses and meet teachers and staff. Information about those events will be communicated as they are scheduled.
We understand that change is difficult for some, while others embrace a new journey. We will work alongside our families to ensure a smooth transition and a successful school year for every student. It is important to acknowledge the positive outcomes from this process. Realigning school boundaries will allow FUSD to maximize the use of school buildings and minimize classroom sizes to allow teachers to effectively provide high-quality curriculum to achieve optimal growth and achievement for every student.
We thank you for allowing us the opportunity to educate your child. It is important to remember that all our decisions are driven by our Mission which is, “To build a culture of collaboration, centered on learning, engagement and achievement through which all students discover their potential to succeed.”

Dear FUSD Family,
Happy New Year! I hope you were able to spend quality time with your family and friends throughout the holiday season and that you enjoyed a restful winter break. I’m sure by now, students are eager to return to school.
Before we return on Monday, it is necessary to communicate the updated FUSD COVID protocols. These updates have been made in accordance with the new changes to isolation from the CDC recommendations issued 12.27.21. As the number of positive COVID tests continue to increase, it is imperative that we follow the protocols listed below to keep our students and staff safe and more importantly, our schools open for in-person instruction.
Isolation For Positive COVID Test
- An employee or student will remain in isolation for a minimum of 5 days from the date of symptoms onset or the date of a positive COVID test (whichever comes first). The isolation period will include the last 24 hours without fever or without the use of fever-reducing medications.
- An employee or student may return to work/school with the Improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath) at the conclusion of this 5 day isolation period.
- Employee / student must wear a face covering for an additional 5 days after the initial 5 day isolation period (days 6-10) once they return to work or school.
- Employees / students should remain in isolation if they still have a fever and symptoms have not improved after 5 days. If your symptoms have not improved, please consult your doctor.
More information for COVID testing and vaccines can be found on our website as well as the Arizona Department of Health Services
Additionally, please make sure your child has their bus badges on Monday and every day! This will help our transportation department to scan and account for every student. For more information about the “Here Comes the Bus” App, I again urge you to visit our website to see how you can stay up-to-date and informed through the use of our District Apps
As we look ahead to a successful second semester, let us remember that the start of something new brings the hope of great things to come filled with new opportunities to challenge ourselves to grow, learn and dream! I wish you a very happy & healthy 2022!

¡Bienvenidas nuevamente Familias FUSD!

Superintendente, Chris Knutsen -

Welcome Back FUSD Families!
We hope everyone enjoyed the fall break and got to spend some quality time together. As we begin this 2nd quarter, we want to focus on the positive and applaud the continued academic success of our students and the engaging lessons researched and presented by our outstanding teachers. Our dedicated professionals continue to provide research-based, high-quality curriculum so that our students can achieve their educational goals.
In respect to our teachers, we feel it necessary to address an issue that sadly, has been present in our schools lately. On the social media app, TikTok, students have been recording & posting themselves taking part in "challenges". Such "challenges" result in destructive behavior of the school facilities, vandalism & more recently require the student to engage in inappropriate physical contact of a teacher that could possibly be construed as sexual in nature.
We encourage parents & guardians to have meaningful conversations with your children about being socially responsible & clearly explaining that these "challenges" are not simply pranks, but are in direct violation of the law, which will have serious consequences. You can visit the following websites to learn more about Tik Tok & how you can effectively monitor your child’s activity.

We will hold our monthly School Board Meeting at Poston Butte High School on Tuesday, October 12th, with the Work Study Session starting at 5:30 PM with the Regular Board Meeting beginning promptly at 6:00 PM.
Also, we wanted to inform everyone of possible transportation delays towards the end of the week. Due to the Country Thunder Music Festival which begins on Thursday, October 14th in Florence, AZ., there is a possibility that afternoon dismissal routes and drop off times may be impacted an estimated 15-25 minutes due to road closures & heavy traffic in some areas; especially if your bus stop is between Arizona Farms and Highway 79 as well as Judd Road and Hunt Highway. These delays may begin as early as Wednesday through Friday afternoon.
We truly appreciate your partnership in making Florence Unified a District by Design. Only by working together can we provide our students with the skills needed for their future success.

Superintendent, Chris Knutsen -

FUSD Families,
Since we have returned to school, FUSD has been carefully monitoring the public health metrics and the percent positivity in each of our schools. Unfortunately, this is still a challenging time for all of us as we see a steady increase in the number of positive cases throughout our state and within our schools. With the health and safety of our students, teachers, staff and families in mind, we strongly encourage everyone to comply with the following mitigation measures.- All staff and students should stay home when you are sick or exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19
- All school campuses will remain closed to non-essential visitors.
- All school campuses will continue to abide by social distancing guidelines when possible
- All staff and students are strongly encouraged to wear facial coverings while indoors and use masks especially in large group settings and for activities with close contact with others who may not be vaccinated yet.
- All staff and students should continue to wash their hands frequently and use hand sanitizer.
COVID-19 vaccines are available to all individuals 12 years and older and you can access more information on our District website. Additionally you can easily schedule a vaccine on the Pinal County Health Department website.
Although FUSD families have been supportive in doing their part at home to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, we have noticed students being sent to school exhibiting symptoms and/or awaiting COVID-19 test results. Thus, the levels of community spread and health trends over the past weeks has been increasing.
We will continue to monitor the situation but we all must do our part to help us all stay safe, healthy and keep our schools open for in-person instruction. Please remain positive so that we can exemplify the character traits we want our students to learn. Our level of commitment must remain high in order to achieve remarkable results in our students’ education. Let’s all do our part so that our students can stay in school where they belong and have a fantastic year!
Wishing you continued health,

RE: Orden Ejecutiva 2020-51
Estimada Comunidad FUSD,

Superintendente, Chris Knutsen

RE: Executive Order 2020-51
Dear FUSD Community,
Late yesterday afternoon, Governor Ducey issued an Executive Order rescinding the mandate that all school districts and charter schools require face coverings to be worn while on any school campus. This announcement emphasizes that the pandemic continues to be a fluid situation. Unfortunately, the timing of this announcement did not provide the Florence Unified School District ample time to discuss and review how it will impact our students, staff and families.
Today, the FUSD administration met and decided that:
Effective Immediately:
Florence Unified School District will continue to strongly recommend wearing masks by all students, staff, and visitors in district and school buildings; however, they will not be mandatory.
FUSD will continue to follow all other mitigation measures in the Return to Learn Plan to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our schools such as safe, social distancing, sanitization efforts in our buildings and buses and continuing to encourage hygiene practices in the form of frequent hand washing. District and school site offices will continue to be accessible by appointment only.
I understand that there are those that both agree and disagree with this decision. However, I know that our community is strong enough to overcome one last hurdle in the response to the global pandemic. We sincerely appreciate the support of our FUSD family and hope that together, we can finish this year strong.
This year has truly tested our resolve, and I am proud of our teachers, staff, students and families. The pandemic has affected us in ways we never imagined, but look at where we are now! In a few short weeks, our seniors will attend an in-person graduation and prom, our 8th-grade students will be promoted and our teachers will have successfully completed probably one of the most challenging years in their career.
So, let’s be an example for our kids to emulate and focus on the positive while we are kind and respectful to each other.

Superintendente, Chris Knutsen -

Dear Florence Unified School District Families and Staff:
We hope all of you enjoyed spring break and are ready to return to school on Monday, March 29th.
On Thursday, March 25th, Governor Doug Ducey issued a new Executive Order that rescinds a number of previous Executive Orders. This new order takes away the authority for municipalities to mandate mask-wearing. However, it does not rescind Executive Order 2020-51 which requires school districts and charter schools to require mask-wearing. or the emergency order from the Arizona Department of Health Services AZDHS Emergency Measure 2020-04 that specifically requires school districts to have a face-covering policy in place.
The AZDHS Emergency Measure 2020-04 states:
Masks must be worn on school campuses, on school buses, and during school-associated activities, by all students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors.
Therefore, at this time, in line with Executive Order 2020-51 and AZDHS Emergency Measure 2020-04, Florence Unified School District will continue with the existing face-covering policy on all our school campuses and offices.
Additionally, the Arizona Department of Education has confirmed that the Arizona Department of Health Services Emergency Measure 2020-04 (Slowing the Spread of COVID-19 in Schools), also remains in place. This order states:
Each school district and charter school shall immediately mandate that masks are worn on school campus, on school buses, during school-associated activities, and while participating in or observing any school-associated athletic activities, by all students, faculty, staff, contractors and visitors.
- Exceptions shall be made for instances when students can socially distance or are outside in playground settings with distancing, and students shall be allowed to take their masks off during breaks and while in a safe environment.
- Students who are engaged in high intensity activities, like running, shall not be required to wear a mask if it causes difficulty breathing.
- Masks should not be worn by children under the age of 2 or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
- School districts and charter schools shall abide by other restrictions and exceptions consistent with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including recommendations for those who have sensory, cognitive, or behavioral issues.
Again, the new executive order by the Governor does not change the state requirement for mask-wearing in schools. We truly appreciate your cooperation as we continue to work together to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our FUSD family. By working together, we can remain positive and test negative!Your partner in education,
Superintendent, Chris Knutsen
