Accounting I

Course Length/Credits: 9-12
Grades: FULL YEAR/ 1.0 CREDIT

This course may be used as a prerequisite for Virtual Enterprise. Accounting is the “language of business” and is a necessary course for all college business majors. Learn the basics of understanding business financials. This course stresses the principles and procedures needed to build a beginning foundation in accounting fundamentals. The course will assist students in becoming critical thinkers and problem solvers. This course is recommended as a prerequisite to College Accounting for those students who have no prior knowledge of accounting concepts.

Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade can earn 3 college credits from Farmingdale State College.

College Accounting

Course Length/Credits: FULL YEAR/ 1.0 CREDIT
Grades: 10-12

This course may be used as a prerequisite for Virtual Enterprise. Planning on majoring in accounting, management, marketing, finance or any other business area in college? Do you have an entrepreneurial spirit and want to own your own business? Then this class is for you. Build your foundation now with this college-level accounting course designed for the motivated student. The topics covered are those in a college introductory course. No previous accounting course is required. Students will learn to tackle the requirements of a college course.

Business Law I

Course Length/Credits: FULL YEAR/ 1.0 CREDIT
Grades: 10-12

This course provides an overview of an individual’s rights and responsibilities as a citizen and consumer. Students will first study criminal law, learning of several types of crimes, the criminal procedures within the court system, and the consequences that result from criminal acts. Emphasis is then placed on civil law including marriage (family law), employment law, real estate (property law), corporate law and contract law, with the use of the internet, presentations from guest speakers, courtroom field trips and observations.

Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade can earn 3 college credits from LIU Post.

Business Law II / Civil Mock Trials

Course Length/Credits: FULL YEAR/1.0 CREDIT
Grades: 10-12
Pre or Co-requisite: Business Law I

Experience the court room drama that you watch unfold on your favorite shows! This law course will focus on constitutional issues and torts that become lawsuits while developing students’ legal reasoning skills and gaining an appreciation for the legal system. Students will learn the basics of court and trial procedures by actively participating in mock trials. Curriculum will focus on strengthening student’s reading comprehension, reasoning, analytical, and communication skills.

Digital Generation

Course Length/Credits: HALF YEAR - FALL ONLY/.5 CREDIT
Grades: 9-12

Digital Citizenship - Creating a positive digital profile can be challenging task for the 21st century student. In this course, you will learn how to utilize the power of the internet & social media to enhance your web presence & digital profile. This is a blended learning course connecting several school districts in Suffolk County. Students will be working on collaborative projects using google drive. Together, you will discover how technology and social media impact society now and in the future.

Entertainment Marketing

This course is specialized for students with a career interest in the fields of entertainment. In addition to a marketing overview, the course is designed to provide students with learning applications in the areas of sponsorship, promotion, advertising, sales, event marketing and communications. Students will also obtain an understanding of the career options available to them, and will have the opportunity to explore current events in the entertainment field.

Enterpreneurship

Course Length/Credits: HALF YEAR/.5 CREDIT
Grades: 10-12

This course may be used as a pre-requisite for Virtual Enterprise. An Entrepreneur is a person who is creative, self-motivated, energetic, and has a passion to be in business for him/herself. The majority of new jobs created each year are a direct result of entrepreneurship and the creation of small businesses. This course teaches the concept of entrepreneurship, and teaches students the steps of starting a business. Students will learn the key characteristics of entrepreneurs and how they have greatly impacted our society. The curriculum is aimed at 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Lessons will be delivered through lecture, video, projects, and guest speakers from local businesses. Students will create an extensive business plan for a business of his/her choice.

Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade can earn 3 college credits from LIU Post.

Fashion Marketing

Course Length/Credits: 1/2 YEAR/ .5 CREDIT
Grades: 9-12

If you’re interested in clothes and current fashion trends, then this is the course for you! Students will learn the principles of marketing and apply them to the fashion/apparel and accessories industry by creating and designing their own retail stores, window displays and so much more. Students will have the opportunity to visit the museum at F.I.T. Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade can earn 3 college credits from Farmingdale State College. Topics include:

  • Psychology of promotion
  • Marketing strategies.
  • Designer accessory terminology
  • Styles of retail displays.

 

The Fashion Foundation

Amanda Munz founded a non- profit organization, The Fashion Foundation. The Fashion Foundation takes donated designer merchandise and sells it at a large discount. The organization then uses the proceeds to buy school supplies for students in need. This year we will visit her new showroom in NYC and talk about about the importance of sustainable fashion and marketing. In addition, we plan to host The Fashion Foundation with a pop up store in our school store.

Introduction to Marketing

Microsoft Office

Course Length/Credits: FULL YEAR/1.0 CREDIT
Grades: 10-12

This class is the KEY for success in your future! You will gain the edge on today’s computer world with the valuable skill of touch typing. Microsoft Word will be introduced and used to format letters, memorandums, reports, mail merges and tables. In addition, Microsoft PowerPoint will be used to create presentations and newsletters. Microsoft EXCEL will also be introduced and used to prepare spreadsheets, charts and graphs. Students will be utilizing the fundamental techniques of Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and PowerPoint. Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades can earn 3 college credits from Farmingdale State College.

Personal Financial Literacy

Course Length/Credits: FULL YEAR/1 CREDIT
Grades: 10-12

It's not what you MAKE, it's what you KEEP that matters! In this valuable course will Students will develop the necessary skills to be personally and financially successful throughout life. Students will prepare a personal budget as their final exam applying the money managing skills learned throughout the course. Topics include:

  • income and taxes
  • checking accounts
  • savings and investments
  • responsible credit card use
  • student loans
  • buying/renting a home
  • buying/leasing a car
  • homeowner's and car insurance
  • career planning
  • resume writing
  • job interviews

Students with administrative approval may be eligible to receive .5 credit in mathematics by taking this course.

Sports Management

Have you ever dreamed of managing the New York Yankees or another professional sports franchise? What about running the “World’s Most Famous Arena”, Madison Square Garden? Today the sports industry totals more than $150 billion in sales annually in North America alone, and more and more colleges are offering it as a major. This course will introduce you to this exciting and growing career field and help you plan a path that will lead to a successful career in the sports industry. Want to create your own sports team and compete against other teams in an on-line fantasy sports league? Students will learn the principles of marketing and apply them to sports projects. See how sports teams get your attention and how they target customers and develop marketing strategies. Students will create and market their own sports-related products. Students will have the opportunity to create their own franchise— from designing the team’s uniform to building a stadium.

Virtual Enterprise

Course Length/Credits: FULL YEAR/2.0 CREDITS (Double period)
Grade: 12
Prerequisites: Business teacher recommendation, successful completion of two (2) Business Department courses, and complete application

Virtual Enterprise is a simulated business that is set up and run by students to prepare them for working in a real business environment. Students will determine the nature of their business, its products and/or services and engage in the daily operation of the business under the guidance of a teacher and actual business partners. Students will participate in the Business Plan Competition and a Trade Show. This course meets two (2) periods every day.

Students are eligible to receive .5 credit for Economics. Students should take a course from the Marketing and Finance Strands before taking Virtual Enterprise.
Students in 12th grade can earn 9 college credits from Farmingdale State College.

Wall Street Investments

Course Length/Credits: HALF YEAR/ .5 CREDIT
Grades: 9-12

This introductory course presents an overview of the financial markets. Students will explore how the markets work and how they can be used to their financial advantage. Students will participate in an investment simulation where they will create and manage “stock portfolios”. This course is highly recommended for those studying business or anyone with an interest in investing or money management. Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade can earn 3 college credits from Farmingdale State College.
