Buchanan High’s athletics is listed in the Top 5 of Cal-Hi Sport’s current State Schools of the Century!!!
The four schools ranked higher (Mitty High School, Mater Dei High School, De La Salle High School and Torrey Pines High School are power-house schools – three of which are private schools – with deep legacies of sports dominance. Clovis Unified tied for the fifth place spot with additional powerhouse Long Beach Poly.
“For Buchanan High to be recognized as a Top 5 State School of the Century is absolutely incredible. This is the biggest recognition that any school can receive for athletics,” said Steve France, Clovis Unified’s Assistant Superintendent who oversees district athletics. “In these challengin times of so many issues, it is nice to get some good news. And this is not only great news for our district, but great news for our entire community. We should be very proud of Bear Nation, including the dedicated young men and women athletes as well as the leadership, coaches and mentors.”
Buchanan High was named the California State Athletic School
of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports the last two years and also in 2005-06. Most recently,
the Bears wrestling team has won the CIF State Championships for the past five
years, girls cross country and girls track and field won their first CIF State
Championship and boys water polo won the CIF Regional Championship. Other
successes have been achieved since 2000 in baseball, softball, soccer and
football. The Buchanan baseball team was No. 1 in California in 2011 and 2016.
