This is my seventh year teaching at Harris Road Middle. My previous experience was in Gaston County schools where I taught both 7th and 8th grade and was 'Teacher of the Year' at my school 2009-2010. Prior to HRMS, I worked five years at Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. At CMS, I was a finalist for the Arts & Science Council (ASC) Excellence in Teaching award in 2012 and a selected member of the Teaching Fellows Institute. At Harris Road, I was 'Teacher of the Year' for the 2017-18 school year. I am from this area (one of the few native Charlotteans) and live only ten miles from the school. My background and education are in chemistry/ zoology with dual degrees in these majors. I have Bachelor Science degrees in both zoology and chemistry and also a a MBA ( Masters Business). Go Wolfpack! ( N.C. State). I am still active in a variety of sports and an avid photographer. You will see me at many of the games (always with a camera). My personal interests include playing basketball, home improvement projects, hiking, outdoor adventures, kayaking, travel, music, tennis, mountain and road biking, time with family and friends, and learning even more about science and technology. An avid traveler, I have visited over 20 different countries around the world. I am also a former amateur taxidermist, scuba diver, sky diver (four times), hang glider, and musician. As a musician, I participated in a variety of musical groups for over 15 years. I am an inventor ( patent holder) and love to incorporate that creativity into my classroom. Thinking 'outside of the box' is how many great inventions were discovered and created. I love teaching and enjoy seeing my students achieve beyond their expectations, learn new science concepts and gain additional knowledge they will use the rest of their lives. I want my students to understand and know why science is valuable and how it contributes to our lives and society. Failure is important. Science is built on the shoulders of failure.
