Course Acceleration

  • With Course Acceleration, students may advance a year or more in the study of a particular subject if appropriate.

    For each school, the options for Course Acceleration are listed below:

    Accelerated Mathematics - beginning in 4th grade, students demonstrating need based on the indicators listed below can be placed in a math class that is one year ahead of the student's grade level. If a student is not demonstrating need for accelerated math in 4th grade, students can be matched in future grades as needs change.

    Classroom Qualitative Performance Indicators for Accelerated Math:

    The student…

    • demonstrates creative ways of solving math problems (as opposed to rote memorization).
    • enjoys a challenge and shows enthusiasm for mathematics. 
    • organizes data and information to discover mathematical patterns.
    • understands new math concepts and processes more easily than other students. 
    • displays a strong number sense.
    • can move flexibly between strategies (if appropriate and necessary) when solving math problems.  
    • regularly uses a variety of representations to explain math concepts (written explanations, pictorial, graphic, equations, etc.).  
    • completes homework on time. 
    • actively participates in class and can sustain mathematical classroom discussions. 
    • advocates for his/her own learning and seeks extra help if needed.

    • Enjoys a challenge and shows enthusiasm for mathematics. 
    • Actively participates in class and sustains mathematical classroom discussions. 
    • Views new problems as a challenge and is always seeking an understanding of why things work. 
    • Demonstrates an open willingness to rethink problems—when new insight is provided/developed 
    • Puts forth full effort on classwork and homework assignments.  
    • Advocates for their own learning and seeks extra help, if needed. 

    Single Acceleration

    • Math League (if taken) of 20 or above
    • MAP score in the 92nd percentile or above
    • NYS exam in the high Level 3 range or the Level 4 range
    • Classroom performance that supports inclusion in the ES Math Program (upper A range)

    Double Acceleration

    • Math League (if taken) of 25 or above
    • MAP score in the 95th percentile or above
    • NYS exam in the upper Level 4 range
    • Classroom performance that supports inclusion in the ES Math Program (upper A range)

    Please note: 

    For a student to experience success in the Accelerated Mathematics Program, it is recommended that they maintain a minimum quarterly assessment average of 80% (double acceleration 90%) and a minimum overall average of 80% (double accelerated 90%). These expectations were put in place to ensure the integrity and pacing of the Accelerated Program while guaranteeing students’ mastery of the course content.  History has shown that students not meeting these expectations at TCMS are more likely to struggle in later and more advanced math courses at BHS. 

    If a student is not meeting these expectations at any time, the classroom teacher will contact the family to discuss opportunities for the student to improve their performance in the class.  We are all available to provide support for students. It is important for families to communicate to their child that help is available.

    Entrance Criteria: Completion of Algebra 1 Honors in eighth grade
