With Small Groups, a small number of students are identified by common characteristics (i.e. readiness level, skills, interest, learning style) to study and work together under the supervision of the teacher.

For each school, the options for small groups are listed below.

Council Rock Primary School

• Short series of work sessions at grades 1 and 2 in which students with similar interests and/or aptitudes gather for an in-depth investigation of a topic extended from a current curricular focus.  To ensure student success, participation is based on a specific set of criteria for each topic.  Groups are flexible and change depending on the investigation. 
• Extended Studies teacher meets informally with individual or small groups of children.  Participation is based on demonstrated need.

Entrance Criteria:   Collaborative recommendation by the classroom teacher and Extended Studies Services teacher based on criteria for each cluster group unit of study

Exit Criteria:  End of cluster group investigation

French Road Elementary School

• Extended Studies Small Groups is a learning opportunity for children with similar interests and/or aptitudes to gather together in a flexible small class setting and investigate a topic/unit in-depth with an extended studies teacher.  ESS cluster groups generally shift to a new topic three times per year.  Groups are flexible and change depending on the investigation. To ensure student success, participation is based on a specific set of criteria for each topic.
