What is Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social an Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

What is Bremerton School District Doing?
Bremerton School District has made Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) a focus for grades PreK-12.  We are working with administrators, teachers, families and outside agencies to learn how to create an emotional learning environment that responds to the needs of adults and students and how to teach social skills that are appropriate at each grade level.

Why it is essential for students?

What we are learning about the Brain?

We are working with a consultant to identify SEL instructional strategies that respond to how the brain learns.

    Three key strategies include:

    1. Welcoming strategies school wide and in the classroom.
    2. Engaging strategies that include brain breaks to focus attention.
    3. Optimistic closure that creates a positive way to reinforce learning.
