How is a STEM learning environment different from your average elementary and middle level classroom?
STEM learning environments are fully integrated verses the typical instructional structure of subjects being taught in isolation. Students learn how to think and apply their skills across the curriculum. They do this by:
- Engaging in project-based and problem-based learning
- Collaborating in an active learning environment
- "Paying it Forward" within the community they live and learn
- Applying learning to real life situations in the 21st century
What does the day look like?
STEM Academy students have 60 minute instructional blocks of reading and math with district adopted curriculum each morning. In the afternoon students engage in hands on, problem based, integrated learning led by the guiding questions for each grade level.

What are the Habits of Mind?
The Habits of Mind are a collection of 16 thinking dispositions (see below) identified by Professor Art Costa. Costa defined the Habits of Mind as the dispositions skillfully and mindfully displayed by characteristically intelligent people when confronted with complex problems to solve.
