• Objective:

    Nutrition and Wellness is a course that develops skills related to proper nutrition and the concept of overall wellness. It includes instruction in nutrition, exercise and diet, healthy food choices, meal preparation, and components for a healthy lifestyle.

     

    Unit 1: Meal Planning and Preparation 

    ______ 1.  Identify food preparation tools and equipment and their use.

    ______ 2. Demonstrate the proper procedures for measuring ingredients.

    ______ 3. Evaluate procedures that preserve nutritional quality, sanitation, and safety during food preparation.

    ______ 4. Demonstrate proper social etiquette.

    ______ 5. Critique recipes.

    Unit 2: Exercise and diet.

    ______1. Understand the role of energy.

    ______2. Describe the effects of body weight and wellness.

    ______3. Evaluate methods of weight control.

    ______4. Describe the concept of personal fitness

    ______5. List health risk factors and their effect on personal fitness.

    ______6. Understand the role of exercise in maintaining a lifelong program of physical fitness.

     

    Unit 3: The Science of Food

    ______1. Explain the connection of nutrition & wellness.

    ______2. Describe the classes and functions  of nutrients .

    ______3. Explain the process of digestion, absorption, and metabolism. 

    Unit 4: Healthy Food Choices 

    ______1. Plan menus for individuals and groups. 

    Unit 5: Home Food Preservation

    ______1. Describe the benefits and common forms of food preservation. 

    Unit 7: Global Cuisine

    ______ 1. Identify regions of the world and factors  that contribute to ethnic foods. 

    Unit 6: Careers in Nutrition & Wellness

    ______1. Describe employment opportunities and responsibilities related to nutrition and wellness. 

    Tests and Grades

    Grading:  A=90-100  B=80-89 C=70-79  D=65-69 F=below 65  I=incomplete

    Grading follows the policies of Biloxi Public Schools.  A mid-term progress report and a report card following the end of each term are issued.

     

     

    Grading Schemes are as follows:  Tests- 55%, Activities-35%, and Exam-10%.  

     

    Test/Major Grades: A test or a project test grade will be given for each unit.  One of your major grades will be the completion of an interactive notebook. A comprehensive final exam will be given at the end of the semester. 

    Activities:  

    • You will be assigned a weekly notebook check which will include bell work, exit sheets, and any other short assignment for the week.  
    • Vocabulary terms will be assigned for each unit. 

    Retesting:  A student may be retested when he/she requests.  A packet will be completed before the review, and then test will be administered.  The student will have 10 days after the test is returned. Projects will not be retested. 

    Daily Work /Projects: If you turn in a project or daily work late, then the highest will be an 80.   When absent you will be responsible for getting your work from the make-up day you return to class. 

    Course Requirements: 

    • Three-pronged folder with a pocket or section of a binder for notebook checks.
    • A composition notebook due the first week of school.
