W.E.B. Du Bois Regional Middle School

Week at a Glance, News and Notes

October 14, 2022

Note from the Principal:

This was another really good week at the middle school.  There is so much going on every day, it seems like a whirlwind from my perspective, as I watch four grades waltz through the periods.  But as I visit classrooms, it also feels so focused and intentional in the learning moments.  This week I got to see students in science class thinking about who gets recognized as an inventor through history and wonder about their own creativity.  Students in health presented to each other about how they “chill out” to calm themselves down.  A math class sought to develop a definition of a polygon.  I got to see kids in social studies grapple with what kind of government would best describe an observed culture that is different from ours.  Students in recess organized a football game with balanced teams.  I worked with a math coach on how to give feedback on the habits of mind of math that are so essential to kids’ understanding.  Students in Spanish classes got to have a catered picnic of “comida latina,” some traditional dishes from our community and around the world.  And we moved forward with planning for our field trips for the seventh and eighth grades next week to the Normal Rockwell Museum exhibit on “Illustrating Race,” connecting the experience to the legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois. These are just a few snippets of what goes on every day, every week in our learning community!

Family choice for student name and identity

Massachusetts now allows for families to tell their child’s school to use a different name for a student that is not the same as the name on the birth certificate and other legal documents.  Please use this form to tell us at the middle school that you want us to use a name for your child that is different from the legal documents we have from when you enrolled them at the school or in the district.  We will update our Student Information System, PowerSchool, with the information you tell us to use, so your child’s name appears as you direct.  If this is a legal name change, please provide the documents to us so we can make the update for the legal name of the student.  Email ben.doren@bhrsd.org if you have any questions about this form or this process.
