WORK BASED LEARNING CAPSTONE (Course #5974)

What is Work Based Learning (WBL)?

WBL is a course that provides students the opportunity to gain real-world experience by working at a local industry that connects directly with the career pathway the student is pursuing.  The WBL can stand alone or be part of the capstone experience.  The VCSC has several local industry partners that are committed to accepting students.  A student can also work at companies that are not currently a partner.

The following guidelines help determine if WBL is the right fit:
The student must have completed the Principles and Concentrator A course and be scheduled into the Concentrator B and Capstone course in the related pathway.  If the student has completed the entire pathway, capstone included, they can also participate in WBL.
Regular evaluations will be completed by the supervising teacher and employer.  The supervising teacher will review these with the student and provide guidance on employability skills.
The student must have a training plan developed that aligns with the career pathway and work experience.
The work experience must relate to the career pathway.
In most cases the work experience is paid.
A student must complete a minimum of 75+ hours at a single site to earn one high school credit.

What is an Internship?

An internship is a paid or unpaid work experience in the public or private sector that provides for workplace learning in an area of student career interest. The career exploration internship is intended to expose students to broad aspects of a particular industry or career cluster area by rotating through a variety of work sites or departments. In addition to their workplace learning activities, students participate in 1) regularly scheduled meetings with their classroom teacher, or 2) a regularly scheduled seminar with the teacher for the purpose of helping students make the connection between academic learning and their work-related experiences. Specific learning objectives for the internship must be developed to clarify the expectations of all parties – the student, parent, employer, and instructor.

The following guidelines will help determine if an internship is a good fit for the student.
The students must have a developed learning plan that is agreed upon by all parties.
The student must participate in seminars and schedule meetings with the supervising teacher.
The student must complete 75+ hours per high school credit earned.
The experience can be paid or unpaid.
The 75+ hours should be with the same company but includes learning about a variety of jobs.
