Her campaign, #1000BlackGirlBooks, had a goal of collecting and donating children's books that feature Black girls as the lead characters. She was the first African American to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, and her Easter Sunday concert in 1939, before 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial, was hailed as a defining moment in the history of civil rights in the United States.

Today for Black History Month, we recognize STEM pioneer Gladys West. West, a US Navy mathematician, pioneered the Global Positioning System. Her mathematical and computer calculations helped create the earlier military version of what we know as GPS, which is now part of our everyday lives. Gladys West was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2018.

In this UCONN ECE course, you will learn some of the greatest stories about gods, heroes, and people that have ever been told.
