• Adele Harrison Physical Education

We are very proud of our physical education program here at Adele Harrison Middle School.  We are a contemporary program which focuses on the state adopted physical education standards and newly adopted common core standards.  We have high expectations for our students so don’t be surprised when there is a bit of written work in the form of homework, quizzes, tests, and an occasional project.  Students are expected to come prepared to class wearing the required physical education uniform including proper footwear. If a student is unable to participate in physical education we require that a note from home or a doctor’s note be brought in THAT day to be excused.  We hope to bring an excitement about life-long physical fitness and to give our students the skills needed to live an active lifestyle.

             Grading

Grading in Physical Education is weighted and is consistent throughout the program.  As in a regular classroom, all assignments missed are to be made up including physical fitness activities.  We will have scheduled make-ups throughout the year for both physical and written assignments.

35% Cardiovascular Fitness – Since running is our main cardiovascular fitness exercise here is how the different runs are graded.

    Big O Little o

This is a  mile run that is done on the high school field worth 200 points.  These runs are individually based. Runs are compared to a student’s best time.  If a student runs their fastest time they receive 5% extra credit. The rest of the grading is as follows.

    Mile Runs

These are graded the same as the figure 8 except the points are tripled since it is our main aerobic fitness assessment. Mile runs are worth 300 points.

    Aerobic runs:  10 – 15 minutes

These runs are to improve endurance.  Students are expected to establish a pace they can

maintain for the entire time allotted.  When a student walks, 5 points are deducted.  For every 10 seconds a student walks 5 points are deducted.   If a student does not give enough effort they may receive a 0.  This is a 100 point assignment.

    Pacer style runs

These are runs that are conducted with the Fitness Gram pacer cadence.  6 student pacer, Pacer 200, regular pacer assessment, all fall under this category.  These runs are worth 100 points. This is an anaerobic style run meant to build strength.  Students are expected to run the distance established in the time given by the pacer cadence.  If a student does not make it across the line before the signal 5 points are deducted. If a student leaves early 5 points are deducted.  If a student misses a turn 25 points are deducted.

    Runs to Music

These runs are similar to the pacer style except without the Pacer CD.  These are done to music. They are worth 100 points. Students are expected to run 60% to 70% of their fastest run. Students are deducted 5 points each time they walk or are not giving the appropriate effort.   25 points are deducted if a turn is skipped.

    12minute track run

These runs are done at the high school track.  It is based on the 6th grade healthy fitness zones.  Students are expected to run 5 laps.  This is a 200 point assignment. Each lap under the expectation is a deduction of 50 points. 2 laps and under is a 0.  This is the one opportunity to get extra credit. For each lap over the expected number of laps 10 points is awarded.

    Whistle Runs

These Runs are worth 100 points.  One whistle is the cue to sprint. Two whistle blows to jog.  Three blows to walk. Students are deducted 5 points each time they are not doing what is expected.  These runs can be anywhere between 10 and 15 minutes.

    Make up runs

Make up runs will be held every Friday morning.  The locker room will be open at 8:20 so that students can be dressed and ready to go by 8:30.  If a student shows up after 8:30 they will need to wait until the following Friday to make up a run.  Reasons for a make up a run are:

    1.  Student was absent due to sickness or field trip.
    2.  Student had a parent note.

Students who have medical excuses are not required to make up runs.

    Life Skills 35%

    In General

Respect, Effort, Being Polite, Teamwork, Sportsmanship, Empathy, Responsibility, and all the other life skills are wrapped into this category.  Dressing out for PE is a major part of this grade. Every two weeks life skill grades are given out based on a 200 point scale. Points are added or taken away depending on the behavior and choices of the student.  100 points are subtracted when a child is not completely in uniform and 50 if partially dressed.. The main 5 point deduction offenses: Not giving effort, talking while instructions are being given, not following instructions, period 1 & 2 talking during the bulletin, poor language, Not getting along with the other students, being disrespectful to adults and peers.

Applied Skill / Applied Knowledge 30%

    Evaluations

Individual, group, and peer evaluations are all ways in which we assess students.   Students need to demonstrate the basic critical elements to the skill we are teaching.  It is not about how athletic. Individual evaluations are based on the students performing the basic critical elements of a skill that has been taught.  It does not matter how athletic you are since the result is not being evaluated the execution is. Generally assessments are worth 100 points students.

    Assessments

Assessments are usually done in groups or pairs.  Students are expected to apply skills learned into a drill or game.  Group must successfully perform the skill a certain number of times. Grades are usually worth 100 points. For each repetition successful  the group earns points. No points awarded to repetitions that are unsuccessful. Generally, a certain number of mistakes are allowed before affecting a grade.

    Homework

Occasionally homework will be sent home.  It usually is an assignment that follows up on what we have done in class.  Homework is due the next class and must have the school’s proper heading. Homework turned in with no name is a 0.

    Projects

We like to have projects go out three times a year.  A project is bigger than a simple homework assignment.  There is usually more than 1 part to a project. A written portion generally comes along with a project.  Projects are worth a large number of points usually that point total being 500. Grading is based on neatness, basic language arts knowledge, all parts completed, proper heading, and stapled if there is more than one page.
