A goal of summer reading is to encourage students to continue to develop as readers during the months of school vacation and to prevent students from experiencing regression in their reading skills, but summer reading is also intended to help students develop a love for reading which will lead them to become lifelong readers and learners. Because research suggests that students enjoy reading more when they are allowed to select their own books, we are excited to present a summer reading program in which students are able to read about that which they find interesting. We are eagerly anticipating many discussions about the texts students have read and have enjoyed during this time of independent reading.

ELEMENTARY
SUMMER READING
Parents should ensure their student reads the assigned summer reading for the grade they will enter next year to prevent learning loss and start the new school year prepared and confident. Encouraging reading over the summer fosters continuous academic growth and instills a lifelong love for learning.
Grade Two
Students in grade two are required to read at least two books. In some cases, these may be chapter books. Please help your student choose a book that he or she can read and respond to. A good way to tell if your student will be able to read a book is the Five Finger Rule. Have the student read the first page of the book. Each time they cannot read a word on their own they should put up a finger. If they put up five fingers on the first page or two, then the book is probably too difficult for them.
Students are encouraged to enter a summer reading program at the local library to enhance their appreciation of reading.
Parents should fill out and return the confirmation slip below on the first week of school.
Grade Three
Students are encouraged to continue reading books appropriate to their reading level throughout the summer. Grade three students are required to read three chapter books, each with a minimum of fifty pages. The students should read books from the following categories:
- Mystery or Adventure
- Biography
- One selection of their own

Grade Four
Students are encouraged to read books appropriate to their reading level throughout the summer. Grade four students are required to read four chapter books, each with a minimum of fifty pages. The students should read books from the following categories:
- Mystery or Adventure
- Biography
- Two selections of their own

Grade Five
Students are encouraged to read books appropriate to their reading level throughout the summer. Grade five students are required to read three chapter books, each with a minimum of one hundred or more pages. The students should read books from the following categories:

MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL
SUMMER READING
Students in grades 6-12 should complete summer reading materials corresponding to their anticipated grade level for the forthcoming academic year.
Grades 6 - 8
Pioneer Valley Christian Academy would like to partner with parents in nurturing an appreciation for reading in our students. Please review the following page requirements per grade for your student and take the opportunity to chose with him/her reading material that you both deem suitable and appropriate for his/her age and ability.
Students may choose novels, non-fiction works, biographies, short stories, plays, or poetry.
Upon completion of the summer reading, please sign the provided form, as verification, and have your student sign as well. Then have him/her return the signed form to the English teacher on the second full day of school.
Students who have completed the assigned page number of reading will receive a 100% test grade in their English class, and students who do not complete the reading or do not return the signed form will receive a test grade of 0%.
GRADE SIX – 500 PAGES
GRADE SEVEN – 600 PAGES
GRADE EIGHT – 700 PAGES
