AP U.S. History – Summer Assignment
Required Textbook – Click HERE

To prepare for the rigor of AP U.S. History, students are expected to begin coursework over the summer. The following assignments are required:

I. Preliminary Reading
Read pages xxxviii–li of the textbook.
This section provides an overview of the tasks and expectations for the course.

II. Chapter Reading and Note-Taking
Read Chapters 1–4 of the textbook.
Handwritten notes are required in Roman Numeral format. Typed notes will not be accepted.

Instructions for Reading and Note-Taking
Begin each chapter by reviewing:

  • The Chronology
  • The Key Terms
  • The Summary
  • Read the chapter title and all blue section headings.
  • Read the chapter one section at a time, taking notes as follows:
    -Use Roman numerals, letters, and numbers to organize notes (e.g., I., A., 1., etc.).
    -Each section and sub-section should begin with a new letter or number.
    -Include 3–5 key details under each heading.
    -Highlight and define all Key Terms in the notes.
    -Use phrases and bullet points, not full sentences.
    -Include information from pictures, maps, charts, and all other visual elements.Notes on Chapters 1–4 are due on the first day of school.
