In the fall of 1972, Pasadena ISD opened Thompson Intermediate at 11309 Sagedowne Lane, its ninth intermediate school. The school is named in honor of George Arthur Thompson, a past Superintendent of Pasadena ISD. At its opening, 1,100 students were enrolled and 48 teachers were on staff. In the early 1970s, Thompson opened an updated Reading Lab, which was the only facility of its kind in the district at the time. During that same period, the communities near the campus were growing quickly and for a time, fifth-grade students were bussed from Stuchbery Elementary to Thompson’s campus. In 1976, the enrollment was 1,028 students and the principal was Earl J. Ritchey.
In 1998, a science wing was added to the school. During Hurricane Allison in 2001, the campus’ orchestra room flooded. Many years later in 2017, Hurricane Harvey produced disastrous flooding and all of Thompson was flooded with 4 inches of water. From September 2017 through February 2018, while repairs were made to Thompson’s campus, the school was relocated to the backside and parking lot of Beverly Hills Intermediate. In recent years, Thompson has become the first of Pasadena ISD’s intermediate schools to pilot Personalized Learning, further integrating technology and the use of data in the learning process.
