For the seventh consecutive year, Pasadena ISD offered free comprehensive eye exams and eyeglasses to K-12 students through the Houston Health Foundation’s ‘See to Succeed’ program. Approximately 1,447 students were examined and fitted for glasses at no cost to students or their families this week at San Jacinto College.
The See to Succeed initiative involved volunteers and employees from the Houston Health Foundation and from San Jacinto College students. This team assisted with examining students who did not pass the state-mandated vision screenings.
Consent forms to participate were sent home for students who failed vision screenings on their PISD campus or were needing an eye examination.
About 300 students were transported daily to and from their home campuses to San Jacinto College. Upon arrival, volunteers and See to Succeed employees greeted students and led them to the auditorium for registration. Students then visited multiple stations which included pre-screening rooms and their first set of eye exams. The process continued in the Health Science building where students saw the optometrist and picked out frames.
“Watching a child who you know is having trouble seeing the white board in class, pick out their very own pair of frames is really something,” stated Shannon Rogers, MSN, RN, Pasadena ISD, Nurse Facilitator. “This is only possible through the hard work of our dedicated school nurses and our partnership with the Houston Health Foundation.”
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Robin Mansur, President and CEO of the Houston Health Foundation were able to visit some of the stations during this week-long event.
