Pasadena ISD held its annual districtwide Chess Tournament last weekend at Beverly Hills Intermediate where students grades 3-12 went head to head to claim the district championship medal.
The tournament featured five competitive divisions, including elementary, fifth grade, sixth grade, intermediate and high school. Under each classification, the players were paired at random and competed against each other.
This process continued for four rounds as students racked up points for each victory.
At the completion of the tournament, the scores were added up and the top eight players of each division received a medal. The first place winner of each division also received a brand new wooden chess set.
The Pasadena ISD Chess Tournament is continuously growing. This year, Pearland ISD, Clear Creek ISD and League City were included in the competition.
"These tournaments give our students a place to compete with other campuses and sharpen their skills... Chess is a great brain exercise. You develop skills that you can use for a lifetime," said Amanda Khan, instructional specialist for Gifted and Talented (GT) and PISD chess coordinator.
The next and final Chess Tournament of the year will be held on May 21 at Beverly Hills Intermediate.
