Sam Rayburn High School alumni returned to their old stomping grounds during the second annual homecoming reunion on Friday, Sept. 17.

The celebration kicked off with a catered lunch inside Rayburn’s Early College High School. Then, it was off to the main campus where students and staff lined the hallways to cheer on alumni and former faculty as they paraded through the hallways for a “Strolling through the Decades” competition.

As alumni walked the halls, it was almost as if nothing had changed as each hallway was decorated by decade, starting with the 1960s, when the school was established. Alumni were required to select their favorite decorations.

The campus festivities concluded with a pep rally in the gym. This evening, alumni will gather onto the field at Veterans Memorial Stadium to cheer on the Texans as they run out of the tunnel just before kick-off at 7 p.m.

Don Diehl, SRHS Class of ’04, was excited to return to his alma mater and see some old and new faces.

“It’s a nostalgic feeling [to be] able to see old teachers and old classmates and all the new additions,” he said. “It’s all about getting kids ready for their careers so coming back and reminiscing and seeing it all is awesome.”

The Texans are currently 4-0 and will take on the Sam Houston Tigers this evening.
