Aiden Williams, a seventh-grade student at South Houston Intermediate, will be recognized by Land Commissioner George P. Bush for his winning entry in the Save Texas History Essay Contest.
For entry into the contest, history students in fourth and seventh grades were asked to write essays based on the topic “What history in your community is worth saving?”
Williams’ essay entitled “Freedmen’s Town Bricks” focuses on the history surrounding Houston’s Fourth Ward, which began as a Post-Civil War Freedom Colony. Throughout his essay, Williams writes about the importance of preserving the colony’s history and highlights the resourcefulness of the freed former slaves who lived there.
“I am extremely proud and honored to be Aiden’s Texas History teacher. The hard work and the effort he put into this essay is inspiring. Moments like this is what it is all about,” said Aimee Schultz, Williams’ Texas History teacher. “South Houston Intermediate and I are excited to celebrate Aiden and his accomplishment!”
Williams will be recognized by Commissioner Bush during a ceremony in Austin on Friday, December 20 and will receive a $500 award.
It’s safe to say Williams is looking forward to attending the ceremony, “I am excited about winning because it would be one of the best accomplishments I have accomplished,” he said.
Annastasia Anowey, a student in Schultz's seventh-grade Texas History class, was also named as a finalist in the essay competition.
