Just in time for the holidays, students at Pomeroy Elementary were excited as they received their brand-new bikes donated by the C.Y.C.L.E (Changing Young Children’s Lives through Education) program.
The program donated 139 bikes, which were distributed by volunteers from Direct Energy and Coca-Cola, to deserving second-grade students at Pomeroy Elementary.
The students received the bikes, along with a helmet, after signing a contract earlier this school year committing to following an individually tailored reading plan to improve their literacy skills.
C.Y.C.L.E. hopes that through the program, each student will achieve grade-level reading or above by the end of the third-grade, while learning about the importance of goal setting.
“Our 2nd graders have been working hard all year to improve their reading levels in order to earn a new bike in time for Christmas,” said Pomeroy Elementary Principal Stephen Harding. “To see their smiles and excitement is a real joy.”
The organization was founded in 2015 with the goal of improving child literacy rates in Texas “one bike at a time.” So far, the C.Y.C.L.E. program has distributed 170,000 bikes to students in the Greater Houston area.
