Course Description
Regents Chemistry Course Description
The Regents Chemistry course is offered to any student with a working knowledge of algebra and fundamental laboratory skills. This is a course for students who are seeking to meet the science requirements for graduation as well as those planning to major in sciences on the college level. Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and how this composition can be changed. Areas of study include atomic and molecular structure, gas behavior, chemical bonding, reduction/oxidation reactions, mathematics of chemistry, equilibria, acid-base theory, forces driving chemical reactions and organic chemistry. This course consists of five class periods and a lab period every other day per week. Students must complete the state lab requirement of 1200 minutes, and have successfully completed lab reports on file, to be eligible to take the Regent’s exam in June. Because of the difficulty level and rigorous nature of this course, students must be prepared to invest time and effort in their studies to ensure their success in Regents Chemistry.
1 credit - Full Year Course
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Earth Science, Biology, and Algebra.
The Honors Chemistry course follows the same general outline as Regents Chemistry, with additional depth of material in each unit. The course requires a detailed knowledge of algebra and fundamental laboratory skills. This is a course for students who are planning to major in sciences on the college level. The purpose of this course is to explore more in-depth chemical concepts. Application of these concepts to the environment, technology and society are discussed. There is an emphasis on analytical problem solving, applying calculations to chemical problems, precision in laboratory skills, and writing of quality laboratory skills. Strong math skills are a must. Honors Chemistry will prepare the student for a college level chemistry class. This course consists of five class periods and a lab period every other day per week. Students must complete the state requirement of 1200 minutes, and have successfully completed lab reports on file, to be eligible to take the Regents exam in June.
