    NON-REGENTS GEOMETRY

    I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:    This is an introduction to Geometry covering the basic topics without most proofs. Some of the topics are Locus, Logic, Properties of Triangles, Parallel Lines, Quadrilaterals, Similarity, Constructions, Coordinate Geometry, Parabolas and Circles, Solids, and Transformations.

    Students will NOT sit for a NYS Geometry Regents Examination at the end of this course. Students will be required to sit for a final at the end of the class. Graphing calculators will be required and provided by the school during school hours.

    II. PREREQUISITE: Algebra

    III. COURSE GOALS: Students will:

    1.) Apply equivalent relations and proportional studies to congruent and similar figures.

    2.) Identify polygons and solids and be able to find perimeter, areas, and volumes.

    3.) Use parallel lines, triangles, and polygons to apply theorems to geometric problems.

    4.) Use right triangle theorems to study coordinate geometry and trigonometry.

    5.) Use definitions and properties to solve problems containing various polygons and circles.

    6.) Use lectures and notes as well as readings to prove theorems are true.

    7.) Work in groups to solve real world problems associated with each unit of study.

    8.) Be responsible for completing assignments and projects using various strategies and materials.

    9.) Use graphing calculators, computer programs, and the internet to complete real world problems.

    10.) Accomplish the ability to understand mathematics in a more in-depth manner. They will leave this course with a better understanding of geometry and logical reasoning.

    IV. COURSE CONTENT:

    1.) Basics of Geometry; points, lines, planes, segments and angle measures.

    2.) Perpendicular and Parallel lines; proofs, transversals, and the coordinate plane.

    3.) Congruent Triangles; proofs, types of triangles, and the coordinate plane.

    4.) Properties of Triangles; perpendiculars and bisectors, medians, altitudes, and midsegments, inequalities and proofs.

    5.) Quadrilaterals; polygons, properties of parallelograms, proving quadrilaterals, and areas of triangles and quadrilaterals.

    6.) Transformations; coordinate plane.

    7.) Similarity; ratio and proportions, problem solving, triangles, proofs.

    8.) Right Triangles and Trigonometry; similar right triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, special rights, vectors.

    9.) Circles; tangents, arcs and chords, inscribed angles, segment lengths, and equations of circles.

    10.) Area of Polygons and Circles; area measures, perimeters and areas of similar figures, circumference and arc length, area of circles and sectors, geometric probability.

    11.) Surface Area and Volume; solids, prisms and cylinders, pyramids and cones, spheres, and similar solids.

    V. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Geometry, Applying Reasoning and Measure. McDougal Littell; Larson, Boswell, and Stiff (2001).

    VI. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Notebook, graph paper, compass/straightedge, and a scientific calculator. A graphing calculator will be provided for in class use, TI-83 + and/or Ti-nspire.
