Pest Control and Pesticide

1. Statement of Policy

The School Board is committed to providing all persons in its school community with a safe environment, including minimizing the exposure to harmful pests and pesticides. Pest control practices will involve a variety of chemical and non-chemical methods designed to control pests effectively while minimizing potential pesticide exposure to students and staff.

2. Implementation

To implement this Policy, the Superintendent's designee shall:

  1. Ensure that certified pesticide applicators or individuals operating under their supervision only apply approved pesticides.
  2. Ensure that pesticides are not applied in the presence of students or staff when they are likely to be exposed to a pesticide residue.
  3. Provide notice of this Policy to parents and staff members annually and identify a staff member to contact for more information, review the chemical inventory procedures, or view the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
  4. Establish a registry of parents and staff members who have requested advance notice of all but minor chemical pesticide uses and ensure that school health professionals have a copy of the registry.
  5. Provide two (2) instructional days advance notice of pesticide use to those on the registry, except when the pests pose an immediate health threat or threaten to disrupt a normal learning or work environment.
  6. Whenever advance notice is not provided due to an emergency, notify those on the registry as soon as possible thereafter and include an explanation for the delayed notice and what pesticide was applied.

3. Exclusions from Coverage

This Policy does not apply to the following minor uses of pesticides:

  1. Germicides, disinfectants, bactericides, sanitizing agents, water purifiers and swimming pool chemicals used in normal cleaning activities;
  2. Personal insect repellents when self-applied;
  3. Human or animal ectoparasite control products administered by qualified health professionals or veterinarians;
  4. Manufactured enclosed paste or gel bait insecticides where students do not have access to the bait; or
  5. Non-chemical pesticides.

Advance notice to parents as described above will not be provided for any minor use of pesticides in Section 3.

4. Administrative Guidelines and Procedures

The Superintendent shall prepare and disseminate guidelines and procedures for the implementation of this Policy.
