WHERE: Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is situated in the northwest corner of Hancock County, Indiana. This suburban-rural community includes the townships of Vernon and Buck Creek and the towns of Fortville, McCordsville, Mt. Comfort, and Mohawk, as well as a portion of Cumberland. This area borders along Marion (Indianapolis), Madison, and Hamilton Counties.
WHO: The largest percentage of the working population consists of residents who are employed in the Indianapolis area, own their own business, or farm. The community is primarily caucasian, speaks English, and native-born. Approximately 22 percent of the students are from minority families.
Approximately 90% of the homes are occupied by single families in the Mt. Comfort Corridor. Just over 85% of those are owner-occupied. The estimated average annual family income in the Mt. Comfort Corridor according to the Census Bureau (2019) is $84,894. Approximately four percent of the families in the area earn annual incomes below the poverty level. The area is primarily middle class. Approximately ninety-six percent of the students are transported to school by bus. The remaining students are transported by car. The median home value in the Mt. Comfort Corridor is $195,975. Approximately 94.3% of the residents have a high school diploma and 37% have four or more years of college that reside in the Mt. Comfort Corridor.
STUDENT & STAFF DEMOGRAPHICS: The Corporation consists of Mt. Comfort Elementary, Fortville Elementary, McCordsville Elementary, Mt. Vernon Middle School, and Mt. Vernon High School. These five buildings serve a school population of over 4,400 students. There are 256 certified teachers, 22 administrative personnel, and 246 non-certified support staff.
HOW MVCSC PROVIDES FOR EACH STUDENT: Student needs are addressed using a multiplicity of activities, which includes a computer device for each student. These range from innovative classroom teaching, academic competitions, athletic programs, fine arts performing groups, and interest/academic clubs. Each building offers resource classes and advanced classes in addition to regular classes. The corporation employs special education staff for additional expertise in addressing the needs of special needs students. The high school maintains the High Tech Academy where students can obtain workforce certification in various areas of technology. The program also includes coursework in virtual reality programming, has a state-of-the-art television studio and was the first high school in the nation to have an Elumen's Vision Dome. The strong focus of the corporation remains on seeing that each student is Engaged, and Educated in the best way possible to Empower them to be successful in life.
